Notwithstanding these embarrassing study outcomes, personally I feel I have benefited from the use of SSRIs. Zoloft has basically given me my life back.
They're all different.

i'm not really understanding your point.

are you saying that big pharma can be full of shyte and that you expected them to be perfect? sorry about that, you're in for disappointment.
are you saying that the entire clinical trial process is flawed because in one instance it was abused? what would you say the solution is?
are you saying that herbal medicine works? we know that it does, new findings can simply be assimilated into new medicines.
are you saying that homeopathy works? i fail to see how the ssri controversy makes the case for this.

if you feel that the case is strong enough for st johns wart, then by all means self administer and buy a farm to start growing the stuff.

I'm drinking a very powerful homeopathic solution right now. In fact, I'm drinking an entire glass of it. We have a big bottle of the stuff sitting on top of a machine that keeps it cool for us. It quenches my thirst and cures every disease known to man. Without it I would die in a few days, literally.

Man water is great stuff.

Anyway.... I would be the results would be different for major depression. And also, this is the great thing about modern medical science - studies are done so that conclusions can be made. Maybe Citalopram is not that effective and we should use something else, okay fine. We'll improve on it, make something that is more effective with less side effects. Thats what modern medicine does - it continually tries to better itself.
