I have been trying to join Discovery medical aid but I have had the worst month going back and forth. I have just been disheartened and I think I will stop that process now. I really wanted their vitality for the medical aid, but I am wondering what hassles I will go through if I join just to claim or if there is need for hospitalization. I am looking for a medical aid that has a similar program to vitality that can help me with gym etc. Also with a good claims procedures etc. If anyone can assist would be appreciated.

hmm, did you use a broker? I have the contact details for an awesome broker that can assist you with Discovery or other medical aids. Doesn't charge anything at all as he is paid by die medical aid companies.

Momentum is a lot like Discovery on what they offer though, if you're really not interested in Discovery anymore.

I myself am with Discovery and very happy with them. Never had any issues.

Did you join via a broker? I found Discovery generally very good and perhaps you are dealing with a crap broker who could not care. Claims process is generally very good and Vitality has it's benefits once you reach Gold status (which is quite easy to reach within 6 months).

For claims which are not settled via hospital/in-practise, Discovery either has drop-off boxes where you just dump the invoice with your details. I prefer to just mail them the scanned copies so that I have it on record and settlement happens within the month (never really paid attention, as it was typically for small claims - so not a cashflow issue).

I Went through their website and a telephone consultant helped me with the process. I did not know of any brokers. I guess I should have used one. Not sure if they will assist at the stage I am at.

I on the other hand had endless crap with Discovery when I was still on my parents medical aid long time ago that they left a very bad taste and wont use them.

I think it all comes down to what experience you have had or close friends or family.

It also comes down to what you can afford and/or what plan you are looking for.

To this day this 100/200 and 300% of medical costs still gets me.

When I was 21 riding bikes, boating etc... acting like a reckless 21 year old does I had a broker who advised on medical aid that would cover me in hospitals ended out being a stupid medical insurance scheme that would cover something stupid like 10% of a bill. (Thank goodness I never needed it)

Just read carefully and understand fully what you are getting into. This is the best advise I can offer.

Some medical aids

Fedhealth
Spectramed
Bonitas
Resolution Health

Do a search there are lots but those above are some of the top ones.

Discovery weasled out of a PMB (Prescribed Minimum Benefits) claim for cancer treatment, giving one excuse after another over a 2 year period. I complained to the Medical Ombudsman and they instructed them to pay the claim in full. The claim was for R 8200,00, not what I thought was a large sum

Now I have received an advice that my cover is terminating from the end of this month

Since joining them, I have paid over R1,1 million in premiums and the total claims to date are R 172000. How much claims to premiums ratio do they need? I would have thought that 8 x claims over 16 years would be sufficient

What is the reason given for the termination?

No reason given, just a note to say the cover is being terminated on 30th Sep "and we thank you for your support over the years"

I reckon they may not terminate just like that and best is to raise it with their customer services first. If that doesn't work, make a noise on twitter/facebook/hellopeter.

Q59. When may my scheme terminate or suspend my membership?

Only on the grounds of failure to pay membership fees timeously or other debts owing to the scheme, submission of fraudulent claims, committing other fraudulent acts, or the non -disclosure of material information.

My monthly premium was R 3045 which was paid by debit order. I have subsequently applied for Genesis Medical Scheme and found their staff much more forthcoming. They also return calls and I don't get a generic reply 10 days later to my email enquiry. I found Discovery particularly bad at that

I did it through a broker and there is no waiting period except for a pre-existing condition and pregnancy, neither of which apply to me and my wife as we are both in our late 60's.

Three of my friends have been members for years and cite excellent service. Lets hope it continues. The premiums are much the same
