My wife and I are having a bit of a rough time at the moment and need to talk some things through. Any recommendations on good non-religious affiliated marriage counselors?

Do marriage counselors actually work or do they just sit there and state the obvious?

We had marriage counselling before our wedding.
I found it extremely beneficial. Yes, they do state the obvious, and sometimes you need to hear an unbiased person (hopefully) saying this.

They also give you ideas and perspective on things that really do make a difference. Both partners need to drop their defense a bit though, and go there wanting things to get better.

I cannot recommend a counselor unfortunately, as ours, whilst they didnt use religion, was a religious figure.

It takes a lot to take that step to get counselling, good luck BCO

It is a help. Mine was also unfortunately religious and pre-marriage.

Um. From what I've seen of my married friends and from what I've experienced, Marriage counsellors/therapists are little more than an expensive band-aid who will help prolong the inevitable.
One Accredited Therapist actually told us at the first meeting that some people just need to know how to say goodbye.

This

I know someone who is now on a trail separation with his wife after 5 visits to a MC.

Might as well get advice from parents and elders. They provide a lot of wisdom.

Yes and no. Sometimes it helps a lot to get opinion from someone that you are not married to; outside the relationship. My friend went to a MC and I just followed what he realized afterwards which did the trick for me.
