It's not worth it at all in my opinion, if you upgraded to 1mb/s that would be noticable, but 384 vs 512 is something like 7 or 10 KB/s difference ;) Not worth it.

ya i learned that the hard way

i signed up because its costing the same for 512 than it did for 384 :)

but its quite a bit sometimes

i mean i can average 56 on a download

could only average 39 with 384

17kbs is quite alot i think :)

Difference is minimal between 384K vs 512K. But there is a difference.. on average around 15kb per sec more on 512K.

Upgrade from 384K to 512K is a mere R120 for the 15kb per sec extra.
(384K = R245 pm, 512K = R362, 1024K = R516)

But then again 512K to 1mbit upgrade is just another extra R154. But now the difference is quite big.. Since 1mbit is already double the speed of 512K. But also all 1mbit lines are upto 4mbit. So you can actually gain maybe 3-4 times the speed of a 512K line.

So for the 384K users it will be a extra R271 (double the price), but you get almost 6times faster dsl speed.

2-4mbit folk report downloads of around 150kb per sec to 350kb per sec.

Not everyone's line sync at full speed, and also telkom or other Isp's do not always deliver at 4mbit speeds... So its a rollercoaster ride...

I had a 384 DSL connection up to July this year. I then upgraded to 512 (took about 4 days from original order placement date). I then (in September) asked to be upgraded to 1Mb. It took about 3 weeks, but now I am enjoying (local) downloads of between 3-6Mb/s! No upgrade cost involved so far - except the increased monthly Telkom bill).

It is quite simple - Faster = more R's!

Double Upload!

Its not so much the extra 128 download that you get. I think the value comes in that on a 512 you can upload at 256 instead of the 128 on 384.

This may make it more worthwile.

but i'm telling all you oaks now, especially the ones at school who's parents pay. don't bother, because the net will never be fast enough. all that happens is that you get used to the speed and in a couple of weeks it'll seem slow. the more bandwidth you have the more GB you burn and the more you pay telkom albeit indirectly.

the amount of money you are paying could be used to finance a car. Also try and do something different, than surfing the internet. most people here are addicted. Lots of us spent all day on the PC because thats how we earn our bread, but after hours use should be limited.

Sell you computer and just use a laptop for two weeks you'll be so bored at first, but then you go out with some old friends and do things you never got round to like renovating the house, or looking for way to make more money, and phoning old clients ect.

Life is too short to spend shopping or playing games on the pc. If you want that same rush, just leave your front door. who needs cs:s when we have south africa out there?
