I am told that when ordering a new system from a OEM Microsoft permits the loading of OEM XP against a Windows 7 licence if requested.

Can anyone confirm this.

"Windows XP Mode" is not viable in the real world, especially when using low powered embedded hardware.

Also, I'm not keen on downgrading 150 copies of Win 7 to XP.

Legacy mode needs specific hardware, does not even work on my quad.
They just released an update which allows XP mode to work on all CPU's, even those without VT extensions.
I believe many netbooks still ship with XP, so MickZA is probably right. XP is supposed to still be supported until 2012, will probably be until the end of time ...

A method I have used in the past is to install a genuine XP pro (don't use a pirate version) which has already been been validated. When it fails validation opt to legalise your copy of windows online & pay by credit card - obviously you need internet access.

Microsoft then will email you a valid activation key which you can use immediately & ship you a nice shiny legal Win XP Pro SP3 CD.

The last time I did this for a client (Oct/Nov 2009) the price was about R1150 (depends on exchange rate, you pay in Rands).

I assume it will still work - after all MS hates piracy & you're trying to do the right thing :D

Labrat: Maybe consider XP embedded if you are an OEM for such devices. Avnet-Kopp is the local distributor as far as I am aware.

With regards to downgrade rights: Refer to Microsoft's site on downgrades. Yes it is generally possible, but there will be hurdles...
Even XP home which is installed on netbooks will come to an end shortly (replaced by Win 7 starter).

Some Windows 7 licenses entitle you to get a Windows XP Pro version if you contact MS. Think it's the Windows 7 Business and up.

Is he picky about the version? I see Mustek still offer XP home off their April price list... And then there are the legalization packs too that contain XP Pro.
