I have an interesting situation, though one that should not be unusual:

1. I retired (at age 65) from my then-employer as per my employment contract;
2. I know that one is not permitted to claim UIF on retirement.

I have now been employed [by a new employer].

1. The new employer is required by law to deduct UIF;
2. OTOH, if I am dismissed by the new employer, my understanding is that I will not be able to claim UIF because I am retired, albeit from a different employer, i.e. I am paying for benefits that I cannot ever claim.

Is this correct ?

Your previous retirement is irrelevant to your new UIF contributions.

If you are retrenched or dismissed by your new employer, you can claim UIF.

There is no such term as "retired" When you retire you are actually laid-off/retired. You can claim UIF. The only time you can't claim is when you resign. (Been there done that!)

Confirmed this to be true. In fact they need to give you a cert to say you have no outstanding UIF to be paid to you before you can claim Gov pension as well.

Thanks for the information, which I confirmed with UIF: it would appear that most of the articles returned by Google are based on old regulations <sigh>

Now going mad pulling together the requisite information - the six months expires at the end of the week ...

I think that you will find that you are too late to claim. The claim has to be in as soon as you are "unemployed". Leave it and they deduct from the six months of payments. But good luck.

According to the website (and staff) I have six months to register. Though, that said, do they back-pay ?

Guess I'll know tomorrow :)

I waited 3 months to claim UIF when I was retrenched. All they did was start it from that point. No back pay. But it did go for 6 months

I would not say that, it runs only for 6 months................ so I expect it to run from now till 6 months is up. Disregarding the expiry bit in the beginning.

Yup, but I'm well on my way to once more having gainful employment, hence the loss ... ! :)

How do you go about claiming UIF once retired? The UIF office gave me a claim form for dependents? Which forms should I complete?
