In March some clown in a post office bakkie crashed into my Panda. I claimed from insurance and they paid for repairs, but I was supposed to be able to claim my excess back (R1700) from the other party's insurance.

This guy has now apparently gone AWOL, so I was thinking about doing some digging of my own. Can I find out who the owner of the vehicle is if I have its registration number?

Is it not owned by the Post Office?

One would think. One would also think that the PO had insurance on all their vehicles. So even if I could trace down which branch the bakkie in question "belonged" to, I might be able to go and pay a visit to the postmaster.

I would guess that the fleet is centrally purchased and the distributed around the country, so maybe start at head office in PTA? Their fleet management unit should be able to help you.

No problem. One other thing, I have been dealing with SAPO for years now, and I find loads of patience is key to not losing your mind. You have been warned. :p

This might work. 'Phone the crowd who do car registrations and tell them that you are thinking of buying the car and you need to check out if it is stolen or money owed on it, who owns it and the address and give them the details. With a bit of luck you are away.

Try this OR you can go to police station, tell them you were involved in a hit-and-run and give the registration plates. Works for me.

Send a letter of demand to SAPO... give them 14 days to respond. Go to small claims court and summons the postmaster general. R1700 plus costs is within small claims court level.

If the driver was driving with the permission of the PO, and was in fact working at the time, The PO is liable. Don't chase their insurance company, that's their job...

But, on further thought, it's YOUR insurance company's responsibility to recover the funds for repair... including the excess amount.
