Watching it on Supersport 1 at the moment. Odd game that. I wonder how big the fanbase is in SA.

I'm an Aussie and love the game. It's bigger than Rugby in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Thank you Supersport 1!! You picked up where ESPN dropped off.:)

It's quick, fast and can be brutal.

Is this a variation on soccer or rugby?

I think there is no variation of soccer or rugby. The ball can be moved in any direction and goal are scored more quickly and easier than soccer. Rugby only moves in one direction for longer periods of time. I fell the tactics are more in line with basketball, but with AFL you can at least tackle and tackle hard like in Rugby.

Did you know that it was initially developed to keep cricketers fit in the off-season? Thus the oval field.
