Hi guys,

Has anyone else noticed a massive drop in 3G coverage in the Northern suburbs with MTN?

Over the last 3 months almost everywhere I go in Jhb I can only connect using EDGE, this is in all places where I used to get perfect speedy 3G. Still using the same phone so I'm not sure what is going on?
Anyone else noticed this?

I've noticed that my iPhone started using Edge at home instead of 3G since late last year, however just resetting the signal would help (switching Airplane Mode ON and then OFF again). Since Jan I've had erratic signal from MTN, internet working every second day, terrible call quality, delayed sms. It seems to have sorted itself out after weeks of complaints and phone calls, so I can completely believe that you are experiencing similar issues. Try the Airplane Mode trick, otherwise contact their call center. Can wait to be rid of MTN in December!

Actually I have noticed this too. Thought it was my imagination. Subjectively I seem to notice more EDGE than 3g prevalent in Pta area.

In Pretoria East, the signal is even worse. My wife loses MTN signal (no service) once in a while.

Have the same thing.

The signal where I live is average at best, always been that way, but more often than not when I travel outside my daily routine places, I get very bad signal.

* in CPT, nothern suburbs

It's because of the seacom, its not fully restored.. I seen the difference as well with cellc,
Not as fast as it use to be,
IS says that the cable is not fully restored yet,
IS estimates that full restoration will be 22 April, I am confident this is why all the networks are slow...

Dude put that bong down, the seacom link is restored over 2 weeks ago and all the ISP's is back to normal. There is no more Seacom/SAT3/ESSAY issues in this country presently. Nice try I presume you work for MTN ?

IS doesn't use SEACOM for their main backbone .... I am on a IS uncapped account currently and getting full speeds with no problems ? Heck if Seacom was down or not fully restored you will have the hordes of Mweb users here complaining again.

This is a MTN issue full stop as Vodacom and Cellc is working fine as well.

It's not only MTN, I don't work for MTN lol,
I have facts before I say stuff,
I know many other cellc users besides myself having trouble with speeds...

Have noticed the same in Cape Town. 3G signal is much worse than its been before, and I've lost coverage in places that I've had before.

(Random thought: could it be that they are re-farming some 3G spectrum for LTE?)

It could be, however I don't see anywhere where I can enable LTE on my iphone 5. If anyone can point me in the right direction, i'll enable LTE and see if that helps

They want you to pay more for LTE, new phones, new modems etc. after all the charge a premium for LTE, and the available LTE coverage is pathetic.
