Maybe provide some details on this mysterious laptop. Like, for instance a brand and model number. Google can answer most of these questions you know. It's pretty easy to look up the supported specs for a specific model.

:erm: All the info is on the first page...

Not quite as banana-like as someone who calls himself "techead", yet cannot into a basic Google search, or even read the product page, then goes onto a Toshiba forum, asks people who then direct him to the product page where the supported resolution is clearly given, then rant about 4k screens for who knows what reason and then come onto another forum and expect people to read the first forum just because he can't ctrl+c and ctrl+v his own laptop name in the OP and rather than emailing the manufacurer with his very product-specific question, spends his time arguing with people on the second forum about other products though.

I added humour to lighten the mood, you just being a **** now.

There is definite confusion regarding the limitation of what appears to be an odd resolution for HDMI 1.4b. If you dont have something beneficial to add, bugger off.

k thanks baai

I have a 2560x1440, and it works with my laptop.
My laptops specs clearly stated that it did not support dual link, but it did support 2x 2560x1600 via DisplayPort.

If you have DisplayPort, or a DVI port (that supports dual link), then it will work.

Dual Link DVI cables are a lot fatter than the single link ones.

Look here for info on what dual link is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface

The HDMI looks dicey.

thanks for your feedback xera. I can confirm that you are right on the money.

I have been reading none stop since yesterday morning, and I have learned a couple of things. Display Port & DVI (dual link) are indeed the "safe bet". However, there are ways of getting your screen to run at 2560x1440 through HDMI.

Has to be at least HDMI 1.4, and Im reading reports of guys doing it online with a bit of tweaking. All laptops, no desktops here coz that all straight forward...

The downside? You are limited to 55Hz refresh rate. Its a bandwidth issue essentially. HDMI was created commercially for TV's, 1920x1080 and do support 1920x1200 natively, but to say that they cannot do higher is incorrect. Hence my investigation into this topic, in hope of helping other people

@vicv

I called around for about an hour yesterday, looking for retailers/suppliers that have a 2560x1440 screen that I could come plug into, no one had. I have had some success, however, with Wootware who are in Somerset West. Im taking a drive there tomorrow over lunch time to test. Will see how it goes and report back here.

The Samsung store in Canal Walk has a demo unit there, I'm sure they'd have no problems testing your laptop on it. I recently purchased a Dell U2713HM myself, awesome monitor.

Well if you called that changes things, they did when I was last there a few weeks back. I can't remember the model off-hand, but it was one of their first entry Samsung 1440p monitors which came out last year.
