Hey guys, the reason I ask is because I am currently studying CCNP and would like to start a practice lab at home.

So far I have 2x Cisco 2501 routers connected back to back with a serial crossover.

Most older routers can still do OSPF, EIGRP, etc and switches for VLANS, spanning-tree, etc

The plan is at the end of the month I am moving to centurion and will be able to connect to the PTAWUG again, then I'd want to setup access to the lab over the wug. So anyone on the wug looking to do CCNA, CCNP could have access to real equipment.

If anyone could help, that would be great, I can collect the equipment in jhb or pta and might even be able to buy it (if it's cheap).

What is "real" equipment ????

What is cheap ????

I have some excess stuff -- which I have had to acquire the hard way -- cash up front.

I need to sell it so that I can afford to buy more stuff I need.

In my experience there is not [/B]"old Cisco equipment laying around at home or work"[/B]

You have to purchase it -- I can tell you where you can get "cheap" re-furb.

Dude, bin those 2500's!!

The only purchase you need to buy are 2 x 3560's (3550's are also fine, cheaper, but will also do the job, just not as versatile as the 3560's - PVLAN's etc)

The next step is to look at GNS3 (www.gns3.net, www.gns3-labs.com).
This is a graphical interface runnning on top of Dynamips/Dynagen, a Cisco router emmulator (not simulator!!) that can run full cisco IOS 1700, 2600,2691, 3600, 3700,7200 routers as well as PIX and ASA firewalls with ATM switch, Frame Relay switch JUniper Router etc.

I have used it to get my CCNP certification and am working towards my CCIE. I have been using this for the last 4/5 years. I am also writing my CCVP exams (unfortunately this is not supported so I had to buy 3 x 2800's with E1 cards etc (See my LAB at http://www.ratemynetworkdiagram.com/?i=12152)

You can now hook up the virtual routers to your "real" 3560's and you good for go to do the switching side of the labs etc.

I cannot reccomend this enough!! This truly is a godsend for those of us who cant afford the real stuff. The best part of it is that its FREE!

If you really want to practise on Real Cisco routers, have a look at http://www.firewall.cx/. These guys are great and offer you (FREE) to use their kit, COOL!!!

Any questions, give me a shout!!
Cheers dude

Dude, thats awsome!

Been using GNS3 to get me this far and it works really well, the main thing is switches and then to integrate them into GNS3

Going to see a guy on monday about some equipment he's selling, I'll look for switches mainly, no more 2500's

@MW, yes I'd like to know where to get some re-furb equipment, any help is greatly appreciated
