Now that the price has dropped significantly and there are easy software hacks abound I'd expect to start seeing more.

Any ideas on when they're going to be in SA? I'm due for an upgrade next year January.

I wouldn't mind getting one :D

You can bet your house that when / if the iPhone does get here the price / service plan is going to be hellishly expensive; at this point I am more interested in the iPod touch, which is basically the iPhone sans the phone and email.

The iPhone got grilled by most/all reviewers - was also thinking about one, but will rather stick with SonyEricsson & Nokia.

Here is a very unflattering review of the iPhone, by a very respectable web site :

http://www.mobile-review.com/articles/2007/iphone-name-en.shtml

After this review came out, Mobile Review was under constant DOS attacks, till they eventually had to shut down - obviously the Apple fanboys/fangirls didn't like this article very much.

Maybe the fact that the iPhone doesn't qualify as a smartphone, pushed them over the edge. :)

I suppose it all depends on how you define a smartphone.

In any event I'm not suprised the author got a bad reaction. His review does not mention the iPhone's strong points like its hi-res display, which has received kudos in every other review I have seen.

He does have a valid point though that the iPhone does not stack up against many of its competitors hardware wise. (I'll take him at his word on playback quality, which I have always found acceptable on my nano.) This may explain why Apple chopped $200 off the price.

I have one so my E90 has taken the back burner. The ease of use of the interface already made it worth the cash. The web browser actually works like a full on web browser.... no need to fiddle with a little stick or a crappy 4way button.

The sms is also great because its like ichat... it follows the conversation and does not keep the sms separate, so you can follow on from the last sms.

I love it... and my girlfriend loves it.

I got mine from http://www.iphoneza.co.za (Cape Town)..... ask for Jason and he will answer all you questions and sort you out with a phone. I am on MTN they say there is still some problems with vodacom incomming calls but they are working on it.

It is allot of cash but if you went out and bought a N95 in the beggining or a E90 cash you would have payed more for the phone alone. I just could not wait anymore and no one at apple can tell me when they will appear in South Africa.

So I am the early adopter and for that I pay.... same with the guys in the US. Its propably easier to buy it over ebay from the US or if you have a mate there that can post it over.

Or get it from Have2Have for just under R5k, and have these guys unlock it for R800 ... but only once the vodacom issues are sorted
