Hi, someone asked me about this Tablet:
http://www.kalahari.com/Technology/Lenco-7-CoolTab-Android-Tablet-Green_p_48016194

Does anyone have an informed opinion on it, or have used it and can give feedback?

It will be used for children playing games, watching youtube videos, and watching videos off the usb stick.
Would it be suitable for these purposes?

Hi

I purchased 2 of these last year as christmas presents for my children aged 8 and 4. Initially I was looking at the tablets sold by Game and Hifi Corp for R999 but these were sold out. Then I came accross the Lenco tablet. It is slightly more expensive but also has some better specs like the 1,2 GHz processor and it already comes with the protective cover in various colours.

The tablet is very good for the price. The display is quite clear and crisp with a good refresh rate. I added a 8Gb SD card loaded with movies for a holiday trip and it runs perfectly. However the sound quality is very poor and even with headphones and volume at max it is still barely audible.

The 4 Gb on board memory is also a fluke. I saw barely over 500Mb. I queried this with Lenco (when you register on their website) and they responded that the memory is taken up by software. I loaded a lot of games onto these tablets though.

Issues I have with that particular Android version though is that you can create multiple user accounts but you cannot set or define their access. My 4 year old at one stage managed to do a complete factory reset and keeps switching on Wi-fi and such. Also the pre-loaded Kidoz software, which allows you to set limitations and content can be easily bypassed. It is after all just a program and even though you need a password to exit the program you can also just switch the table on and off.

The other difficulty is in after sales repairs. The in-evitable happened a few days ago and my son cracked his screen. We returned the tablet to the store and they returned it to the agents. It will cost R900 to repair.

From my point of view they are worth it. Other than a few niggly bits it is perfect for younger children. How long they will last though I am not sure.

If you can spare an extra R100 a tablet then I'd recommend you go for the Gobii tablet from Kalahari .

I bought two of these for my two daughters last year (aged 7 and 9) and all in all they are excellent for their needs. They just use them for games, watching Netflix and locally stored movies.

The only downside is the WiFi strength but that can easily be fixed with repeaters. Other than that there is nothing else to complain about. You get access to Google Playstore which is a plus R120 worth of ebook vouchers to load books to the tablet.
