How does one check the version of the firmware?

And just to be sure there is no need to reconnect the UTD via USB?

You must use USB ... only way to upgrade. Load installer package ... will tell you current firmware ver and ver of one it will install ... you can always cancel at that stage if you dont want to go ahead.
