Did you guys see how much CA's are being offered? Based on all the IT jobs, CAs seem to be getting good salaries. I don't think I want to check other management offers.

Are there developers out there with around 5 years experience making over 70k a month? I love IT but maybe we might be get the short end of the stick.

CA's get paid a lot because of the rather significant barriers to becoming one, 4 year degree plus 3 years articles plus having to pass board.

The only IT people that get payed well are:
A) Developers.
B) IT admin staff that have firewalled themselves into the company (making it impossible for anyone but them to manage the it infrastructure through design and lack of documentation however this generally means its a waiting game of cost of a redesign and new employee vs cost of keeping you).

Any other positions in IT get treated as solely a cost for a company why spend money on IT sys admins, security etc.... it doesn't make us money. Never mind all the great preventative work and how much time IT saves people doing their daily jobs.

Once again this is my experience so take it with a pinch of salt I may be wrong.

And they hate their lives and are miserable with boredom, that's what you get paid for.

People think accounting is boring and tedious until they see Auditing, plus your name is on the line with every set of financials you sign off so you have no choice but to pay PROPER attention to those boring figures.

For those that stay in auditing I would agree, however all the CA's I know left auditing as soon as they finished their articles. One of my friends held out for 5 years and when he finally moved to corporate he said he should have done it years ago.

There are many areas of development that pay a lot more than this in SA. Overseas, there are a ton of development positions that pay many times what CA's earn in the same locale.

You gotta factor into it that a CA qualification is treated like gold here, overseas not so much. I don't think you see university students wanting to study accounting in their droves overseas, yet here its probably the most common major.

It's a job - like any other it comes with pros and cons.

It's also hugely merit driven - the top guys get to cherry pick their work & this affects job satisfaction massively. e.g. last week I mentioned to a director in passing that I want to do a cool overseas assignment not the stuff I'm assigned. Flying out Monday.

It's pretty popular globally. CPAs for example in the USA have a comparable rep.

It opens a lot of possibilities if you want a high management position. Most students go into it for the money.

IT is probably one of the worst careers you can pick, especially for an intelligent person. If you dont know what you are doing and think windows defender is the bomb, then stay in IT, but for anyone who is intelligent and can pick up skills, dont go into IT. It is not worth the time and energy. You are expected to have the knowledge of a scientists, but are treated worse than a janitor.

Exactly why I didn't even consider becoming a CA.I considering becoming an actuary which will probably earn you much more than any CA,you just need to be handy with some math and I got into the course for it at wits but at the last moment I decided I'd rather do what my heart wanted and studied mechanical engineering.

That way you do something fun(hard work but interesting and fun none the less) and guess what most mechanical engineers do what Cray mentioned eventually they end up in other high positions which may not be related to engineering at all but with good salaries.

Others branch of into project management.Still good salaries and more fun than a CA's job.
