Apple Carplay and Android Auto offer functionality beyond what a basic infotainment system is capable of.

My car boots up into Android Auto and switches off with the car. Never ever use the native system anymore

At the time of writing, CarPlay requires that your device is running version 9.3 of iOS or newer – while Android Auto requires a minimum of Android 6.0.

Not sure about AA but the oldest carplay compatible phone is the 2013 iPhone 5.

To add insult to injury many Androids don’t support this natively and require sideloading and other tricks to make Android Auto work.

For example, the S6 from 2014 supports it
