Its true...

Apple have droped the non-colour screen iPods (IE the 20gig, 40gigs and U2 edition) and have replaced them with 20gig, 400gig and U2 edition colour screen iPods starting @ $299.00...

There will no longer be a black and white screened iPod apart from the minis...

Welcome to the best of both worlds. Now that iPod and iPod photo are one and the same, every white iPod boasts a full-color display — ideal for viewing album artwork and playing slideshows — starting at only $299. Choose from 20GB or 60GB models and carry up to 15,000 songs or as many as 25,000 photos in your pocket. For Mac or PC.

I think that's a stupid move personally. The price will just be higher, and those that just want a basic music player, but choose iPods over a normal mp3 player, aren't wanting some fancy little gadget

I think you'll find the range is now - for the full size models - 20gb and 60gb. All colour screens. Its a good move I think.

i'd say its a bit early to drop the mono screen, only makes sense to drop it once they got video support in their ipod range...

I am quite happy with my monochrome screen - the colours look a bit too much like the Windows XP theme, cheap.

I think Dovi meant that this would make the price higher than competitors who could market "just" a "simple" music player to those who don't want the photo viewing functionality. Is that necessarily true though? Since with software, once you've already spent the 'fixed cost' on implementing the photo viewing functionality, it actually costs more to introduce 'scarcity' by splitting the product into two for different markets than to just have one single software product that does everything. Likewise it's cheaper to manufacture and market one single hardware product than two (in terms of design costs, marketing and other overheads), but of course the downside is more expensive parts. You'd probably partially make up for that with larger economies of scale on the single product. I'm rather out of touch with portable music player prices though, so I don't know what prices the competitors charge.

They have kept their price the same. This is just a simplification of the ipod range before the release and ipod video player.

But what about those people who just bought their 20gig/40gig monocrome iPods like 3 days before and now they have just added a colour screen at not extra cost...

I'd be pissed

40 GB monochrome were discontinued a while ago. I think Apple has a policy that if you buy something less than 30 days before an update is released you can swop it in and pay the difference if any.
