Hi Guys

I recently managed to get myself an Apple G5 Mac Pro Early 2009 and I wanting to use it as server for my Plex and use it stream sport and various other stuff

I finally got all the connection cables but now I have a problem getting audio to play throught the TV when streaming using the OSX browser.

Doing some research seems like this Mac doesn't support audio over HDMI. It does and optical.

So anyone have an idea how I can got about getting audio to my Samsung Smart TV. The Samsung has and optical port but its and optical out so I can't go straight into the TV from the mac.

Any suggestions?

I can use it just as a server but need a machine to stream via a browser pc/mac browser just seems more stable than the samsung browers.

Suggestions please

and go

Can you not get the Plex app for Samsung smart tv and just stream? I think this would be best because then you can use your tv remote to browse your plex library.

Also your Mac pro is not a G5 if it is an early 2009 model. They switched to intel cpu's and phased out the Power Mac G5 in 2006.

That's not the best and most efficient way of doing it... I doubt its a G5s as G5s when out during 06 the Mac Pro is Intel and are power hungry and generate alot of heat - Dual Xeon CPUs.

Rather get a PI and connect it up to a HDD or NAS and go from there - client side should be easy just run the Plex App from say SmartHub then connect to the media server over your home network. You can also use software like Sick Beard to automatically update your media to your liking and quality and point your Plex to that media.

You won't be able to do much with the G5 as it uses the old defunct Motorola chip, and no new recent software supports the old architecture any more. You'll need an Intel based Mac to run any modern day software on it.

This - the G5 was discontinued in 2006.

I believe the OP is incorrect in stating it is a G5. All Mac Pro's are intel, the G5 was a "Power Mac G5" and went out of production in 2006.

My mistake guys

Its is a mac pro guess I say G5 as that what they were originally called.

So no to using the mac as a server for the plex.

I already have plex working via my PC laptop where I have sickbeard and everything setup already disc space is always a problem as my drive is space is not that big and as I didn't pay for the machine (ex work machine) i thought the G5 would way to solve the issue.

The laptop is an old one seems to struggle with the bigger HD movie files so I thought the Mac Pro would handle the HD movies much easier.
Spec of the laptop attached.

I tried connecting an external HD to the the laptop as a way to get more space and point plex to the hd but plex didnt like this.
