So with the late arrival of iTunes music and movie rentals etc., what other restrictions are there still on the South African iTunes accounts?

Since all the Apple services are available locally (at least what I'm aware of), I am contemplating converting my US account to South African hence the drawn out payment method having a US account.

Does the South African one have the music and films you want? There are definitely releases that are available on the UK one, but not South Africa.

There are some apps which are not released in SA. Even Namco has a larger catalog for US vs SA/rest of the world.

Note this:
After you change the country of your account, you won't see the items you purchased from the previous country’s store in the Purchased section.

So if you have to reinstall or get a new device, your old purchases will be gone.

Found this on Apple support:

After you change countries, you will no longer receive application update notifications in iTunes for the apps you purchased in your original country. However, you'll still receive update notifications on your iOS device for any applications installed on it. In addition, you'll be able to download previously purchased applications again for free if they are available on your new country's store. You will not be charged and the download will not appear on your Purchased page. If a previously purchased application is not available in your new country, you will not be able to download it again for free.

That's nice. But if it's not available, you're SOL'ed.

That's the trick. Before someone just ups and changes from one country to another, they should first confirm that all their purchases will be available in the new store. Google Play is the same. I have a US Play Store ID with all my purchases, music etc and a UK ID just to get the BBC iPlayer.

The other problem I've run into, is that my SO's Apple ID is South African. I would like to set up family sharing hence the cheaper subscription to Apple Music. But 'cross continental' family sharing is not possible.

Haha, I doubt cross continental things were made to be compatible.

Why not get a South African one as well then? No need to give up or convert your US one.

I have an SA one but i've noticed the iBooks store SUCKS!! why Apple, WHY!!

Other than apps which developers have limited, like hulu, netflix, games and other apps most of which i don't use i've not seen much issue such that SA account is my primary and I use the US one only to get some region restricted apps.

America has greater degree of freedom of speech than SA. It may be that they just don't want to bother with more self policing to avoid bull-hit complaints from South Africans.

No Books.

Just run the SA one side by side to your US one.

I'm fortunate that my iMessage/iCloud account was made an SA account from the very start.
