Do they get any IP address when you set the Mac to DHCP?

Maybe there is another DHCP server on network giving incorrect network settings

hehe.....reminds me of one of my facepalm moments.

I used a Telkom ADSL router as a normal 4 port switch, but forgot to turn off DHCP on it - it created havoc on the network, before I figured it out. I'm still embarrassed about it.

Also if your running a mixed mode network (ie macs and windows) Windows machines can assume the same ip address that in use by a mac machine if its set to dhcp. Have a quick check to make sure yuo dont have the same ip address in more then one place.

???. How does windows assume an ip address of a mac when all the addresses are allocated by dhcp?

This bit leads me to believe that you had a working configuration that is no longer working. IMO the first thing to do is to confirm that the client DHCP requests are still coming in to the freebsd box by running tcpdump on it.

So they get no IP address for the gateway as in, the gateway address is blank or do they get the wrong IP address in the gateway field?
