Apple Pay now available in South Africa

Digital mobile payment platform Apple Pay is now available in South Africa, according to several Absa, Discovery Bank, and Nedbank customers.

Thanks to all the forum members who provided details and alerted us to the story (and specifically Kwetsima).

No love from Android with Android pay
The FNB app on Android already serves me well, I just need it for Discovery.

Yes both Nedbank and Discovery worked for me on Apple Pay. Both also worked last year for my Fitbit Charge device too.

Is there any reason one would choose Apple Pay over FNB Pay? Both are tap and pay, is Apple Pay better?

FNB Pay, you have to unlock your phone and go into the app. Apple pay just makes it easier for lazy people

There is Samsung Pay, but it is limited to the top devices only. Works like a charm.
Not sure if Google Pay will ever be rolled out here though. They should support more devices.

I stand to be corrected because I don't have an iPhone and can't verify this but afaik the APIs needed to enable contactless payments at supported NFC terminals hasn't been opened up to iOS developers yet. The only way to use Tap to pay tech is with Apple Pay.

Can read more about it here & here.

At this stage it seems the only difference is that the functionality is not enabled. No other benefits of one over the other like lower fees or better security (from what I can tell).

I have the scan to pay shortcut enabled on my widgets, so presently I swipe right (from the lockscreen) and click the shortcut which opens the camera for payment. I assume tap to pay would work the same.

American Express / Nedbank seems to have their house in order. All cards added successfully.

ABSA -> debit card added fine, can’t add British Airways ABSA card.

100% confirmed FNB is down and out for the count.

Absa and Discovery VISA cards added painlessly. Ok except for the extremely long-winded terms and conditions from Absa. Discovery Bank's T&Cs were much shorter. Now to find a POS terminal that supports it. Sorry Zapper and Snapscan.

I wonder if it’ll work on the POS that accept tap and go. According to Apple, it’ll work anywhere where you see the Apple pay signage and what looks like the Tap and go signage

Yeah was wondering if it specifically needs Apple Pay support. Took a couple of months before Tap payments were supported by most terminals in the country.

Last thing I'd want to do is take only my watch / phone shopping and find that I can't pay and don't have my wallet.

any Tap & Pay terminal should work.
