Apple Pay South Africa

I don’t understand how it could ask for a PIN that never existed in the first place.

These are tokenised cards, for all intents and purposes they are blissfully unaware of the physical card’s existence and can’t know it’s pin.

They also can’t have a pin themselves.

Sounds like broken point of sale to me.

I suppose it's fine if it asks for a PIN but strange that it didn't accept the same PIN that was accepted moments later at the same paypoint with the physical card.

Yeah that is strange, I remember someone saying if you put in 0000 it also goes through. I am yet to test it though.

Yeah sounds like a broken pos especially because it only happens at one place for me and it’s every single time I go there, Even when using my virtual card it still accepts my actual cards pin, or are the pins linked?

Same thing happens to me at a particular Chateau Gateau in fourways, always asks for a pin, I just enter my card pin and it goes through.

But then again Apple pay was probably trying to stop you from buying clothes at edgars.:p
The out of date POS must be falling back to the card tap transaction

For what its worth, seems you can now set and change the pin on FNB virtual cards. Which suggests that the virtual card wouldn’t automatically inherit the pin of one of the other cards linked to the account.

The Virtual Card doesn’t know the physical card exists and has no idea what it’s pin is.

It’s linked directly to your account.

No trouble with ABSA, apart from the fact that with Apple Pay it defaults to credit card payment.

I never had any troubles before, been on Apple Pay since it launched last year.

Got a replacement debit card a few weeks ago, the new card was updated automatically in my Wallet app.
Got a replacement credit card two months ago, the new card was updated automatically too.

Then two weeks ago ABSA upgraded me and sent me a new credit card. The two-month old card still works but ever since the new card arrived, and maybe because the previous one still works, something went haywire. I simply cannot add any of the two credit cards to Apple Pay. The debit card still works fine though.

Spent 30min on the phone with ABSA's customer care, in the end they couldn't help me. Went to my local branch this morning, they phoned another department, and after doing some checks etc. they couldn't find anything wrong on their side, so they referred me to Apple support.

Spent 45min on the phone with Apple support, tried various things, in the end they couldn't help me. They are now referring me back to the bank. So it is a catch 22 situation.

I know this is a very long shot, but is there perhaps anyone that has experienced something similar - and if so, did you ever solve it?

How many cards are actually in your wallet application?

Remove all your cards and check that the Absa app knows they are all removed.

Add one new card and see what happens?

You should be able to select a default card - for Apple Watch, open the watch app on iPhone > Wallet & Apple Pay > Transaction defaults > Default card

This was surprising, never expected Capitec to implement this.
