It seems to be dependent on the amount, not the teller. That sounds like someone in that shop being a bit clueless

I use Apple Pay all the time, works great.
There is no technical reason FNB cannot enable it, it's purely business. Let's wait and see what IOS 12 brings.
I’m going to Hong Kong next month, will any of my SA cards work on Apple Pay?
With a local card?
Thanks. You use a virtual credit card that is supported by Apple Pay. Just load it with Paypal or swift transfer as needed.
It's a stupid idea because - you pay forex exchange to get the money into the USD or EUR account, and pay exchange again when you buy in ZAR.
Does anyone else have the option to setup Apple Pay on their device? I recently did a clean install with iOS 12 beta and the option appeared to set it up. I haven't tried using it though.

So the holdup in SA are the SA banks, not the merchants or Apple.
Used Apple Pay successfully yesterday at my local restaurant, using their standard NFC compatible card machine.
I activated my LLoyds credit card with my SA itunes account.
Worked like a charm.

Which restaurant was this and also which places in South Africa support the most mobile payment methods as here in Durban, haven't seen much of them?Correct. The merchants have never been the issue with this. It's all the banks. As soon as ABSA, FNB, etc start supporting ApplePay - you will see it spread like wildfire to businesses supporting it as they all will more than likely have NFC POS devices already.
