:confused:Hi there, is there anybody that can give me some more info on the Apple iMac. I am new to this Apple game and don't want to make a mistake by buying the wrong apple. Someone told me to make very sure this is what I want as it is very different from Microsoft and takes some time to master the operating system.

I have a iPhone (and love it!!!) so I just thought my next step - to move away from Acer - will be to buy a apple iMac.

Anyone??

can't go wrong with iMac

Apple has the highest customer satisfaction ratings in the IT industry. Brand loyalty among Mac users is off the charts, which means that once you go Mac, you will never look back again.

Unless you need a very powerful machine for pro applications (in which case you should go for the Mac Pro line), you will be just fine with the Mac. The latest iMac got particularly good reviews, it's very fast and has a fantastic display.... and in case you still need to use the occasional Windows program from your dark Acer days, iMacs run Windows just fine (through parallel booting, or virtualisation). Mac users joke about the Windows world as "the dark side of the force". Once you are one yourself you'll understand what they mean - before, it's pointless to try and explain...

Enjoy your iMac

You will need to learn a few things at first which if you're used to Windows can take some time to adjust but after a while of adapting you'll find macs productive if not easier than windows.

Just be sure to read the help manual that comes with a mac and OSX rather than frustrate yourself.

I switched to Mac earlier this year. I used windows pc's for more than a decade. It was a really good experience, yes some new things to learn, but really easy. I even bought a Mac guide book to help me through, but never needed to use it!

Best thing I ever did. Just recently I bough my second mac, a mac mini, to use as an HTPC.

Good luck with the switch!

Glad your making the switch. I am very happy with my mac started on them beginning of last year. Just make sure that there isn't anything you really use that is windows only. You can VM windows, but i am not the biggest fan of that idea.

good luck, and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask, we will all help out where we can.

I recommend going for the cheapest iMac, or the most expensive - they offer the best value for money. If you can get one from the USA go for it.

The 27" with a quad core & 4850 is a great investment, wow what a PC!

I got started with OS X running it on my PC, (hackintosh) and I love it. Wouldn't hesitate to get a Mac if I had the money.

Be advised that Apple are looking to revamp of their processor lineup AFAIK. Maybe they will go i7.

Apple is great as far as the OS is concerned. What I have issues with is the hardware. Advanced games are out unless you can afford a MacPro. They also get quite pedantic with things like DRM and DVD regions. There isn't usually a way to fix the latter on their drives.

The hardware isn't much to write home about. It tends to be overpriced for the innards. I.e. you're paying over the odds for a fancy cover. I've also experienced very early failures in their peripherals, like the mouse and keyboard (The new one is an odd chiclet type).

Don't be swayed by the bundled software. It's just glorified shareware and a leader into their more expensive offerings.

People are also reporting driver issues with Windows7 and dual-boot compatibility. I'm sure they will fix it, but if it doesn't work, then who wants to wait?

There's no blueray with this, despite the enhanced resolution.

A computer is never an investment. In fact it gets old quite quickly, so anticipate a replacement after around 2-3 yrs.

Macs tend to outlast PCs. My 2006 machine is still going strong. I even plonked an ATI 4870 into it last month. Especially now since computers have been good enough in performance since the Core 2 Duo range came out.

Also you can connect an external BD and watch BDs that way but only via Bootcamp or VMWare and Win. There is however a BD ripper for Mac, available for free.

How so? my macbook 2007 model was easy to upgrade, added 4GB Ram and a 500GB drive, it's good for another 3 years.

PC's today last at least 5 years. My quadcore is from 2008 and still has a few years left in it.

Hi! So i bought my Mac this morning, after staring at the box for about 10 minutes finally took it out. We have done the setup, but can't seem to connect to the Netgear router (ADSL) at home. It picked up the netgear router and the name but when we enter the web key it says time out - or something. The airport wireless has been switched on though. Am I doing something wrong?

I guess if you're just browsing the internet and storing your recipes, then it doesn't apply to you.:D

Do I need the Airport express software to be able to connect to the Netgear wireless router. My Mac picks up the SSID but doesn't want to connect when I enter my web key. It says time out after a couple of seconds

For that, Celeron/Pentium 3/Pentium 4/Pentium D/Pentium Dual Core/Pentium M and various Athlons are good enough :).

Maybe change the security on your router to use WPA and not WEP

Had the time out issue. Keep trying to connect it will connect eventually (i also have the netgear). Then do the update to 10.6.2 and you should be good to go. I havent had it time out since i went to 10.6.2, but then i am using my ethernet cable a lot more as well.
