Major Apple iPad overhaul in the works

Apple will overhaul its iPad lineup in 2024 to make the range less complicated and boost sales, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports.

Gurman says Apple's current iPad lineup, which includes the ninth generation, tenth generation, Pro, Air, and Mini, has become "cluttered and confusing".

Most definitely. So many different models. It’s difficult to figure out which one to go for. I ended up with the iPad 10 though.

The problem with the current lineup is that you often don't know the generation and how they compare with the others without having to do additional research, and this is a mess Apple created themselves when they decided to call the iPad 3, just "new iPad". They could have stuck with a consistent naming scheme similar to the iPhone (although that was a bit of a mess in and by itself for a while)

Taking descriptions used by various websites for example:
  1. Apple iPad 9 10.2" -> ok, fairly clear
  2. Apple iPad 10 10.9" -> ok, fairly clear
  3. Apple iPad Air 5th Gen 10.9" -> the average person has no idea where it fits performance-wise to the above
  4. Apple iPad Pro M2 12.9" -> the average person has no idea where it fits performance-wise to the above
  5. Apple iPad 9.7" -> ???? (The smallprint on the page identifies this as 5th gen)
  6. iPad mini (6th Gen) -> the average person has no idea where it fits performance-wise to the above
  7. Apple iPad Pro 11inch 4th Gen -> the average person has no idea where it fits performance-wise to the above
  8. Apple iPad Pro 12.9inch 6th Gen -> the average person has no idea where it fits performance-wise to the above

They will buy it for the screen size anyway.

I don't find the lineup confusing hey :unsure:

Probably will end up with an air and pro each with two sizes.
I think they should rather go with one size per model, so people

iPad 10" - the basic model, basically a big iPhone
iPad Air 10" - mid-range iPad with current tech
iPad mini 8" - same tech as air, but in smaller size
iPad Pro 12" - top end tech

i.e. an oversize ipad air 12 or a 10" iPad pro made redundant.

My opinion. Air 8in/10in - Pro 11/13

Edit: Previous Mx generation processor in Air and cutting edge in pro.

Have the 12.9 inch model. Works well but battery life is poor

I’m just rounding. With shrinking bevels there’ll probably be a 12/14 (rounded up) pro but you get the idea.

That’s what I meant, with rounding the standard iPad (10.2) is 10”, but the Air (10.9) is 11”. It doesn’t use the same screen.

I would more expect Apple to have a 8”, 10” standard and 11” Air and then the Pro at 11” and 12.9” (which could be called 13”).

The air becomes the odd one in the middle then. More likely they’ll opt for the air branding since it’s so popular as with the MacBook which fell away in favour of air and pro.

What is the point in owning a tablet nowadays with phones becoming more and more larger, and laptops more compact?

Much better for media consumption than either of those.
I can see the appeal when reading manga or novels on a larger screen. But I'd rather watch video content on a TV, or if I'm lying down in bed a phone is much lighter than a tablet.
