wonder how the rest of the steel industry is going to take the loss?
NO need to worry -- when there is NO power you do NOT need ANY steel
The ANC's buddies the Chinese will supply - AND build AND take over ... eventually !

Kumba Iron Ore - 2019 Total Sales Guidance, AMSA impact

Following AMSA’s decision to wind down its steel operations at Saldanha, Kumba has reduced the 2019 total sales guidance to 41.5-42.5Mt from 42-43Mt. The production guidance for the full year 2019 is unchanged at 42-43Mt.

Kumba will continue to assess the effect of AMSA’s strategic asset footprint review on domestic sales and will update the market in due course. Importantly, export sales contribute 94% towards the company’s total sales and Kumba’s high-quality iron ore products are well-positioned in global markets with ongoing customer demand and a stable export order book.

We will of course continue to work with AMSA and other stakeholders both in Saldanha and elsewhere to suggest ways of mitigating the negative effects of the closure on the community and our business. We are sympathetic to some of the difficulties faced by AMSA and it seems clear that the industry’s difficulties are multifaceted and include competition from cheap imports, rising costs and muted demand for local steel. This means the industry’s challenges cannot be solved by a single intervention. We are committed to engaging widely to identify options to help support their sustainability and that of the Iron Ore and Steel industries.

They are now turning their attention to the Newcastle mill and beyond.

“Obviously the impact is larger than only Saldanha and potentially Newcastle, as you have to resize the whole organisation to fit a smaller footprint and a lower liquid-steel production,” Verster says, revealing that as many as 3 000 jobs across the company could be affected.

Although the review has not been completed, Verster tells Engineering News Online that the most likely scenario is for all upstream liquid-steel production to be consolidated at Vanderbijlpark, in Gauteng.

Downstream rolling and processing activities, meanwhile, will continue at Vanderbijlpark, which will supply material to other value-adding plants, including Newcastle, Duferco and Highveld Steel. An initial study is also under way to assess the feasibility of relocating some of Saldanha’s downstream facilities to Vanderbijlpark.
