Are social networking sites bad for employment opportunities?

Is this a huge can of worms?
- discrimination: in what way do my personal beliefs and view impact my ability to perform in a particular role;
- Privacy: If the people performing these web searches are not 'my e-friends' then they do not have rights to the information. I have not shared it with them and they may not use it this purpose.

Or a complete none event...

- If I hold particularly strong negative views on, say, wearing purple trousers; I probably should not work for the 'Purple Trouser Company', nor would I want to.
I suppose it might be difficult in 50 years time when I have changed my view on purple trousers and the website is still available on GoogleArchive... But then would I want to work for someone who thinks that something written long in the past has any relevance today.

The internet community much just "shut-up", that is what this implies.

Discrimination (read: unfairness caused by absolutely anything in life) is part of life. Nothing anybody has done and will ever do will change that.

This includes (relatively new one) the internet (wow!), family, friends, more that friends ( :) ), racism, etc, etc, etc. It does not say that I support any of these, but it's alive and real and it's staying.

I would not confuse FaceBook with LinkedIn .. they are both social Networking Sites, but cater for different purposes.

An employer that googles you to check refrences is entitled to... but he must know the difference between crap and reality.
OR
Dont put junk online about yourself! .. You cant expect Saldam Rushdie to get a job in a Mosque? or even a job at ANY place that has that faith :)

I notice all the "rookers" are open about their habits, also if you apply for a position at a jewish owned company and you profiles show you added yourself to the "Death to Israel" group, cant be good.

As scary as it all sounds it wont always be practical. Have you tried Googling your own name? Have you tried doing a Facebook search for your own name?

All these analysts haven't considered that different people have THE SAME NAME AND SURNAME. Example: when I look for music videos of a band called "Bush" on youtube I have to refine my search to exclude the 15 gazillion videos of Kate Bush, George Bush things recoded at Shepherds Bush..etc. I'm sure trying to find someone called "John Smith" is just as easy.

Corporations have always sought to impose censorship with these very same threats.
