I have an itunes account at the moment, and use an iPad and iPod. I set up a fake name and location so that I can access the US App Store/iTunes, as I think the SA store has really really really limited apps (well, none of the good ones anyway, particularly games... eg. Angry Birds) and then you can't get any music/movies

Probably gonna get my first android smartphone soon (S3), so just wondering if there's a similar situation? Or if we in SA have the same access rights to the app store as the yanks?

I have no idea, but i am guessing we have prety much the same acess as the rest of the world - i dont recall setting any location setings but since prices are in rands i asume it figures that out, anyway all the angry birds are there so knock your self out

You use your gmail account for everything on Android, I don't remember setting my location, and I've hardly seen anything on our market that's not on the yanks one and vice versa, except for Starfront for some reason.

We get the same apps as the rest of the world, though our movies and music are still limited.

Google does it by Source IP and by network operator, so you won't be able to bypass the limitation on music unless you manage to spoof both ( Which is possible, VPN plus MarketEnabler app )

It's not just down to your account, it depends on where you are and more importantly the sim card you have in your phone.

For example, last year I was in Chad and I could only get some free apps using the local sim card, but when I put my Vodacom sim in, everything was available. But even when I had a local sim card in I couldn't install things that I'd previously purchased in SA using my Vodacom sim and were on my account already.

There are quite a few countries where Google don't sell, but essentially if you have your SA sim card you are good to go and have access to everything. And this is for wi-fi downloads, roaming doesn't have to be enabled.

Hmmm, that wasn't as easy to explain as I thought it would be :)

For some insane reason, I still cannot install Google Earth via the Play Store - reason: Not allowed in my country (South Africa). 1metre away, Google Earth is running on my PC. I did manage to get a copy from someone else in the US and side-load it tho. And as someone else mentioned, none of the really cool Google stuff is allowed to work here: Voice/Telephony, Music, TV. (A quick Google(!) search will show you how to get around that tho.)

There are a few apps that are unavailable to us, like Google Music app, but market enabler takes care of that.
