Do they get their commission from the client or from the service provider (hotel, airline, etc.)?

Yes we got charged like 20k at the agent when we could have done it online for 16k or less.

So yes they charge a lot.

Some people go and get a itenary from a agent and then they take that and go book it themselves with the airlines etc. I am sure though that there are deals that can only be done through agents. Specials and that kind of thing.

Depends on the type of holiday you're organising.

As always, get quotes, and shop around yourself.

We did a long northern hemisphere holiday a few years back that involved a lot of different flights and the travel agent beat the best price we could find online. They seemed to have reserved some tickets a while before at especially low prices that they could then pass on to us for less than we could find it ourselves. Hence I used the travel agent. Only thing they could not do was train tickets as well as Ryan air flights to more obscure EU airports. Hence we booked our main long haul flights with the agent and the smaller side trips ourselves as the Ryan air tickets where a lot less than what the agents could offer.
