currently sharing with one person, awaiting my own office to be done so i can move it.

generally, speaking form a development pov; programmers should be in their own offices.

-so do you have your own office, share or open plan; love it or hate it ?

I am in an open office, IMO developers should be able to easily speak to each other without having to walk around between offices. However, having everyone on a internal or ecternal IM service also works for this and can be less disturbing.

I have this rule though, if my headphones are on and you can hear the metal blazing from it DO NOT DISTURB ME.

Other than that I like the company an open office idea provides.

i use IM to chat with another dev, but our team's offices is right next to each other.

no i don't have my own office. Open office. why should programmers have their own offices? I'm also a software developer, i think it depends from one person to the next. Users can be disturbing at times by calling you now and then. If that's the case i think we can tel the users to minimize this or log a call/request.

why should programmers have their own offices?

Open plan office

We IM each other when we can't be bothered to walk over and ask a question - and it's easier than shouting back and forth :D

bull; you just like to watch :p

because for example working on the financial system of the company one should have silence without disturbances. I for one;

definitely don't want to hear what you did last night, how you going to shag up with that girl or the other one, what you mother has to say over the phone, the flirting from both sexes and so on...

Its interruptive and each time your concentration is disturbed it caters for faults. I'm quite sure its been proven that people are more productive when they have their own office space and its an "effort" to go and chat/smoke/interact, but you get some that needs that little pat on the back or eye over the shoulder to function.

Lastly allot less of stressing each other up. I've worked in open plan before; maybe just being in the call center, but we were allot on each others nerves till break point sometimes.

My air-conditioned office is about 10m x 15m. It's on the second level so I have a wonderful view of the whole town.

And ... I have my own little storeroom!!!

Studies have shown that for a 1 min phone call it can take up to 15 min's to get your concentration levels back up to where they were.

We are 11 developers in a single Open Office - quiet a large one I must say. We all face a wall, actually I have the window over-looking False Bay from Somerset West mountain. It works for us as we not only do development but we are also all involved in maintaining our infrastructure - so when things go pear-shaped, you just voice a WTF to get everybodies attention.

But we have a chill-out corner, boadroom and a really nice outside area (one with a braai, and another one with a swimming pool).

Makes me think, I was once ons a 3 day course presented by Alistair Cockburn (One of the gang of 4 for the people who do not recognise the name) and he told us a good story.

He used to work in his basement but he got very tired of looking up from his work and being alone. So he opened up a coffee shop, gave the place decent internet access and started working from there. He said it was much nicer having people around him the whole day.

well that can work, but not all employers do it that way. One of my main gripes would be the fools who go about their phones via speaker.

I work in an open-plan office and I dislike it. I'm a technical person (senior developer and unfortunately team lead) and I don't like interacting with others. It really gets on my nerves when peoples phones ring incessantly or if they keep receiving sms's. Mostly my team is pretty well-behaved but we have this new junior developer (young Xhosa girl - No, it's not a racist statement. It's to give you and idea of the cultural background.) and she insists on screaming at mic on the phone every 10 minutes.

Apart from that, we don't just do development and there's a constant drone of voices and activity in the office. I'd be at least twice as productive if I worked in a closed office. I now come in at 6 before everyone starts at 8-9 and I tend to leave late at night just so I can focus on my work without constant interruptions.
