Hi All

Firstly let me apologize for two things:

1. My ignorance
2 For probably posting my original question in the wrong thread.

I beg forgiveness and please I am not spamming I just need some urgent info as per thread

http://www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?p=603320#post603320

Basically I'm moving to a house with an alarm system that has panic buttons, armed response and some remotes etc. I am at a total loss as what to do. I am primarily an ISDN user and have an ISDN2A setup. What I dont understand is how will the alarm system etc work when I'm dialled up at 128k and if it can't and I get ADSL will it work when I'm online.

Is there any hardware or software I need to buy to make sure my internet connection is always working. I often download large files all night ;) and need my alarm system to work.

I hope I'm making sense to someone and not sounding like an UBERNOOB.

Please advise me what to do?

Thx

BTech.

AFAIK alam systems come in 2 flavours. First is the dialup ones, and second the radio type (which doesnt require a phoneline). Im not 100% sure about ISDN, but with your adsl line you get a normal analog line. You can use the analog line even while connected to the internet. So if you have adsl you wont have a problem with the dialup alarm system. I would however suggest going the radio route. I would not want to put my safety/security in telkom's hands. Imagine your panic button not working because your telephone line is down.

Thanks, afaik the home I'm moving to currently has a chubb security system. I hope that my ISDN won't be an issue and that they use radio alarms. I'l have to check with em. Anyone had any experiance with chubb and issues as mentioned above:confused:

We're with Chubb too, and as far as I remember Chubb encouraged us to opt for the radio route as ADSL causes problems when dialing out. Even when I then told them I have a seperate stand alone normal analogue line on a different number to the ADSL line I can use, they still recommended the radio route - so as zerofocus said, rather don't be left at Telkom's mercy :)

I'm not sure if the alarm systems come with an ISDN module or not - but the normal jobbies will NOT work on a raw ISDN line (you'll prolly blow the unit if you plug it into raw ISDN - as ISDN runs at 100v) - unless you link it through one of the ports on an ISDN2a unit (unless you have an ISDN modem with analogue ports).

If you have an ADSL line, just make sure you plug the module in via filter... OR just get a seperate analogue line.

Radio is better tho - it's what my system uses, tho you need to pay a yearly radio license fee (which is not very much at all).

My Chubb system is only connected via radio to the control room. If your system doesnt have this then its a simple matter to just ask them to supply one. It connects to the control box. There is an annual radio license fee (to ICASA?) which is under R100.

Posted at same time as Geek so what he said.

My alarm went through the analogue port on my ISDN router. My setup allowed for one of the ISDN lines to drop when necessary - ie an outgoing landline call or fax.
