Army deploying thousands more troops in South Africa

South Africa will significantly ramp up the number of soldiers deployed to help quell riots following days of looting and destruction of businesses, after the government said a military presence may be helping to ease the violence.

Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula told lawmakers that troops in the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng will be boosted to 25,000 from about 5,000 now, following a discussion between the government and opposition parties.

Its just weird how things are so different in KZN/Gauteng to where I am. Things are mostly normal here, no shortages in the shops etc.
Less than 700km away and its a war zone. Just another day in SA living the dream.

Really? Your Gov not calling in Cuban Troops and Police, they so dearly love? Cuba has their own problems currently, so it won't work.

20K more troops? Eish, now that KFC is going to kak off. The battle for the chicken will be won in no time at all.

50000 less than what the army deployed to arrest people walking their dog.

This makes me furious, he pranced around in his military outfit intimidating people locked in their fkn homes. But when they are burning an entire city to the ground he sends out a measly 2500 soldiers. I understand deployment takes time but sheesh, seems like he didn't take it serious at all...

You understand that those 50000 additional troops were deployed across the country, right? You've probably got a higher concentration of troops now than you did last year.
Doesn't detract from the fact that they were very quick to deploy the army to beat people to death for the crime of sitting in their own yard during the world's deadliest pandemic.

You need to make up your mind - do you want troops on the streets or not?
I don't want troops on the street looking for mobs to gun down, because that is what Julias Malema and the EFF want.

They need to be stationed at businesses as a show of force to stop them being looted. That and running patrols along the N3 to keep it clear.

"Less incidents of violence and looting" does not mean no incidents and of course there will be less by default after everything already being looted.

These Geniuses never surprise me.

Another desperate cry for help is contained in the saddest press release among tens of thousands I’ve seen in four decades of journalism. Received yesterday from Gayle Crow, communications chief at property company Exemplar, it reflects the unprecedented chaos wracking the country (which for SA, says something). It reads:

The Mall of Thembisa in Clayville can confirm it has received reliable intel that it has been marked as a target in the ongoing looting and unrest that is currently taking place in Gauteng.

After coming under significant attack from high calibre, live ammunition throughout the night of Tuesday 13 July, the mall was able to repel the threat thanks to the hard work and commitment of the teams on site.
It has however been credibly confirmed that we will face more intense and organized attacks tonight, Wednesday 14 July. We are calling on law enforcement agencies, SANDF and government to assist us in protecting the mall at all costs.

As an entity that has been instrumental in the creation of more than 4 500 jobs direct jobs for the community it is vital that we receive the assistance needed to protect the mall.

We would like to thank the community for their efforts in assisting us to date but at this stage we urge the residents of Clayville, Thembisa and surrounds to stay at home for their own safety. We anticipate substantial attacks throughout the night and for the safety of our community and their families we urge them to stay indoors and away from the mall

You are disgrace. I don't think you are who you pretend and just trying to stroke up racial/ethnical tensions on this forum for no reason.

Its so totally obvious he's a troll, and a lighty as well who thinks he's so very cool and funny.

Little does he know that he just comes across as an idiot.. Couldn't argue or think his way out of a paper bag.
