Article: Corruption is theft: Gordhan

Honest citizens and civil servants should fight corruption in the government tendering process, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said on Monday.

"We are in danger of becoming what many call an 'extractive society'," he told the SA Institute of Professional Accountants conference in Boksburg.

How is the man in the street supposed to deal with the epidemic of government corruption?

Let's see some people going to jail (not ****ing hospital) for life for stealing from the taxpayer.

He is reffering to the people in home affairs and social welfare stealing money that is suppose to go to disabled and elderly.

Breaking news : Grass is green. Stay tuned for more startling revelations!

Thing is, the average voter in SA does not actually make this link. They don't see it as stealing from them, because they didn't pay any tax in the first place. It's stealing from the RICH who thoroughly deserve it in their opinion.

They don't realise that that money should properly be used to educate their kids.

That's a good point... the disadvantaged masses really don't care... cos they are not losing anything that belongs to them or anything that they had before.
In fact, the prevailing culture simply sees a successful government minister as having a flashy car and a nice suit... they don't care how he got it.
And good education for their kids? Please... that's too far removed from their thought processes. They would rather just have people give them stuff for free.

That's why I think the media should stop reporting amounts stolen in rands. Average Resident has no cooking clue what R2bn means when it comes to an aeroplane.
They should report it as "200 000 rdp houses will not be built, because Jacob wants a golden shower in his plane"

Those stealing from government for their own benefit were doing so at the expense of poor people.

Did he just pull the poor card? As if all this stealing isn't at the expense of the rich, white, elderly, middle class etc. too.

Some days I think the whole ANC resolves around the word 'poor' .. like in poor leaders, poor service delivery, poor president, and soon everyone will be poor as a result of their poor running of the poor country. No responsibility, no integrity, no future .. the ANC is a poor party indeed.

But hey Gordy, how about you fscking fatcat corrupt leaders set the example for a change and start at the top where this corruption epidemic eminates from.

Now all thats left is a firm definition of "Corruption". We've seen far too many people suspended/fired for "irregular or wasteful expenditure" or "maladministration" but it always ends there, no charges brought against offending people.

If the evidence is good enough for one to lose their job, it should be enough for a criminal conviction right?

The level of corruption in politicians and senior business leaders is an indication of the overall level of corruption in society.

Illegal copying of books, films, software, tax evasion, jailbreaking phones, mnet decoders etc.

People find reasons to justify it, and say its a form of protest. But that is BS. They are "protesting" behind the anonymity of the Internet.

Then they harp on about the corruption of politicians and bankers etc. hypocrisy.

At some point those very same politicians and bankers where nobodies dodging taxes, stealing cars, installing pirate software.

If you want to be serious about corruption, you need zero tolerance from zit-covered teenagers to politicians. Won't happen ofc., it's so embedded in South African culture in some form(black and white), that it will forever be a hidden tax on the economy.

Difference being, downloading an mp3 is a victimless crime. If you don't believe me, I invite you to watch any episode of Cribs.

Stealing a million bucks from the SA fiscus has many many victims.

Corruption is not unique to SA culture at all, the problem here is that the perps are so busy being badass that they don't get around to doing their day jobs.

One lowers the standard, making the transition to more serious corruption easier.

Like the bank robber who tells the customers to not resist, because their money is insured. Next time that bank robber kills someone.

And it's a fallacy to believe that downloading mp3's is a victimless crime. The artist who made the mp3 loses money.

When a politician steals money, the individuals share of the loss of a million bucks us less than the income lost by an artist whose work is stolen.

Both are a form of corruption.

Trying to justify your corruption by convincing yourself it doesnt do any harm.

That's exactly how the politician thinks. "It's only a small part of the budget"
