Like I've always said ... if Joe Average can turn on his PC and get a 2+ KM omni range with a vanilla wifi card, mesh networking is going to explode.

I suspect telkom will be declaring wimax cards WMDs and banning their importation (like they tried with wireless ap's).

Makes for some interesting security senarios, think about it, you have WiMax card in laptop. sitting in offic complex, now the network admin got to keep in mind that his network might be hacked from the building next door by a person entering his network through an unsecured Wimax card on te MD's laptop because the MD son played on the laptop the previous night,

dont make a msitake, would love to have this technology become available, just the sys admin side in me seeing some interesting scenarios imerging.

Not really, we already run wireless networks in our offices, they're not that tricky to secure.
 
Spam, i know about securing it, i am wondering about the owner or or family opening it up for a purpose at home and not skilled or clever enough to close it again,

is there ways/processes you monitor on a continues basis to pick up changes/open points.

Easiest way to secure them is to encrypt the transmissions and block access via mac address. And you did say a sysadmin problem :)
 
And how stable r they Spam? A few of our subscribers have them, and of course also go online the same way, from a central point in the office. Trouble is, our online facilities are secure sites, so each "glitch" results in an "expiry" and they have to log on again. Quite a few of them have called me about this.

Mesh networks are all very well for doing a little web surfing, e-mail, or something; anything requiring decent bandwidth / latency, though, is a different story.

erm no, there is nothing intrisnically dodgy about wireless connections, just the people setting them up.
 
Last week I had the opportunity to listen to Intel's
President and Chief Operating Officer, Paul S. Otellini
at a function overseas.
If he left one important message for the future of Intel
it was WIMAX WIMAX WIMAX!!
These guys are serious and intend embedding WiMax technology
into future Notebook and PC chipsets.
They are aiming to own the Desktop AND the Network (Just look at their current WiMax partnership with Telkom).
They also predict the demise of ADSL as newer and cheaper
embedded technologies (WiMax) will make ADSL obsolete.
