The sad thing about this is ... on contract 5 months @ R200 with 8ta would yield 100GB@R1000 in total. R2500/100GB once off on prepaid with CellC.

On Vodacom their MyGig 20 Once-off Prepaid is R999. So for roughly R4000 you would get 80GB of prepaid data, while the OP will have to fork out R70K+ for lower usage. Yeah, they can do that. Even if they make the OP pay R10K they are still making a profit.

At R1 per mb out of bundle that is R1024 per gig. So R12,000 a month is just 12 gig out of bundle. Can be done in one day on a decent 3g connection. Maybe ignorance isn't so bliss after all.

I don't mean to sound insincere, just saying many people don't bother to find out what their usage costs. The fact that your company waited months before telling you your bills are ridiculous also puts them at fault too.

Hi all. Just to keep you in the loop of whats going on. I have brought all the info that you guys have supplied me with into our meeting and discussions about the 3G card to my bosses. They have agreed that they strongly believe that I have not 'abused company property' and they think there must be something else going on here. They are doing a thorough investigation into vodacom about the sky high charges. There was no discussion regarding the person responsible for handing me the device without limits set and for them allowing these monthly accounts to run into thousands before discussin with me. I will keep you informed of further outcomes.

This isn't true, not for YouTube at least. YT has an internal rule where HD streaming is only allowed over a WiFi connection. :)

Edit: I double checked this and now I'm not so sure. I tested and while I cannot change the quality, I also can't be sure what rate I'm streaming at.

I hope the OP gets some help. Being told this so far down the line and not in Month 2 is absolutely not on.

Huh?
If my line is running well it will automatically default to HD.

ADSL yes, 3G is different I think. I'm using Vodacom LTE right now so will test again against a clip I know has HD available.

Edit: I tested this and while the quality is good, I don't think it's 720p. I'd be keen to know the truth to this if anyone else can test?

I tried to hide the video to prevent an off topic spin but couldn't.

Excellent. Hope this can be cleared out, and any further occurrences of this nature be prevented.

Pity Voda is so reluctant to implement proper hardcapping on contract accounts.

On a mobile device, it will default to SD when connected via 3G. It will only stream HD when connected via WiFi or if manually set to HD.
But a Laptop which just goes through the normal browser will not care if you are on 3G, it checks the lines throughput and if it's sufficient, HD will be the default!

I would definately recommend that everyone on contract sign up for Vodacoms' Data Notification Email Service.

From the sim you want to receive notifications for, send this SMS to 123
DNES ON <e-mail adres>

You will then receive a daily e-mail with your data usage and bundle usage.

It is irrelevant how the bandwidth was used, whether it was work related or 8hrs of cat videos a day, if the company handed you a dongle with no limit, did not advise you on usage and failed to monitor it for six months, they are entirely responsible.
