ASUS mobo problems

I've got the ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe.

Today I finally got my new 4400+ AMDX2, after putting it in everything seems fine, but it doesn't want to run at 100%. Both cores putter along at 30% tops. Also it looks like my temperature readings are incorrect as well.

Luckily my cousin's got the same board as me and recently upgraded to dual core as well. After doing some research he found that he needed to update to the latest BIOS version. After updating he was sorted out.

So all I need to do is update my BIOS.... shouldn't be a problem right? :)

Wrong.

For some completely, totally, fscked up beyond all fscking reason, reason. I can't get any of the BIOS update programs to work.

There are three: ASUSUpdate (which runs in Windows), a DOS utility called AFUDOS and finally you can update using the EZ flash utility by pressing Alt+F2 during startup.

ASUSUpdate for Windows doesn't install cause it says it doesn't detect an ASUS motherboard, the DOS utility doesn't pick up the ROM and when I press Alt+F2 during startup, for the EZ flash utility, it just hangs.

I'm seriously pissed off now. More than likely there is somthing wrong with my motherboard. I can't think that all three BIOS upgrade utilities would fsck out like that. If someone has had this problem before or has any advice I'd be gratefull.

Full specs:

ASUS A8N32-SLI Dleuxe
AMDX2 4400+
2x 1Gig DDR CorsairValue RAM
XFX 6600GT 256MB
Creative Audigy4
2x 80Gig Seagate HDD (running RAID0)

I'm gonna go to bed now before I kill somone. :(

*EDIT*

Fixed the post to read ASUSUpdate and not AutoUpdate.

Check in the BIOS that there is no flash protection enabled.

I have the same board.

Auto Update for Windows is not for BIOS updates.

Do this. Go to the ASUS website. Download the 1205 BIOS and save it to disk. Use the ASUSUpdate utility and select update BIOS from file then point to the save BIOS (ROM file).

Just pray you dont have a power failure during the process :D

Sorry, was a bit mad and tired when wrote that post. I actually ment ASUSUpdate.

ASUSUpdate doesn't want to install. It tells me that it doesn't detect a ASUS motherboard.

From all the mobo problems I see recently , all you guys should have went DFI. These boards f#cking rock! The settings make you feel like a kid in the candy store again!

Please read bios flashing method carefully for your mb! Then read again.

I personally do not like flashing bios from windows. I you got a stiffy drive rather use AFUDOS from DOS. Windows safe mode - command prompt.

If you want to use Windows, I have found that the Asus Update Utility is pretty reliable. Follow instructions on post above and you should be ok.

Do a cmos clear afterwards (as per mb instructions) and set up the bios.

Good Luck,

sdd

I'd suggest something ( in the BIOS settings or a board jumper ) is write-protecting the BIOS, hence the hang.

*sigh*

OK, I know you are trying to help sdd, and I'm gratefull, so I'll just go through it step for step with you.

Yes, DFI are cool. But personally I don't want to overclock and I really don't like the software package you get with DFI. So no.

Did that for four hours last night, over and over and over again. :(

I personally do not like flashing bios from windows. I you got a stiffy drive rather use AFUDOS from DOS. Windows safe mode - command prompt.

I created a bootable disk to boot from (as specified in mobo's manual). AFUDOS tells me it can't find the ROM when I know that it's on the disk.

I used ASUS Update on my previous mobo so I know how it works. The problem I have is that the ASUS Update prog doesn't want to install..... at all. When i execute the install file it bombs out giving me some weird error. I then click on OK and it gives me another error telling me that it couldn't find an ASUS motherboard so it aborted the installation.

The last option available to me (givin by the mobo's manual) is by pressing Alt and F2 together during POST startup. In theory it's supposed to ask me for a disk with the latest BIOS on. Then update accordingly. When I do press Alt+F2 my screen goes blank and hangs..... doing nothing.

I tried looking for something like this but couldn't find it in either the BIOS settings or on the motherboard.

But I don't think something like that would prevent me from installing the ASUS update utility.

Well, i have the same board, and i've had bios probs since i got it. Cmos bad checksum each time i start it. I just press F2 to revert to default, and i can boot into windows, but this obviously is only temporary. Everything works fine, i can use the pc, but its not optimal. I have good OCZ ram that needs bios tweaking, but i cant save any changes in the bios, everytime i get the bad checksum, i go F1 make some changes in the bios, F10 out, it restarts, Cmos bad checksum. The bios update in windows won't connect me to the site, or any of the alternate mirror sites, tells me its full, and to try later, for a few months now, lol.
I can't slot in my **** hot creative card as you need to change bios settings to turn off onboard sound. When i power down the PC, i still some power running to the mouse(light stays on), so i have to turn off the switch on the psu(TR2-500w). Its all a bit disappointing, and this will probably be the last asus board i ever buy.

Take it back for warranty replacement, thats what i did with my Abit, its a valid warranty reason...

i meant put your old cpu in

Yeah. You might need to update it with an older CPU. However, my board worked with my 4800+ and FX60 right out of the box. Really strange problem you have there. I've had mine for a long time now and its never given me a moments grief. One of my favourite boards ever. :)

Got a new board. Almost beat the crap out of my box when after re-installing everything it still didn't want to run ASUSUpdate.

Luckilly the other (Alt F2) method worked and it's working fine now.

BTW, this 4400+ runs really cool. Have yet to see it go above 35 degrees when on load. :)
