CAIRO, Aug 14 (Reuters) - At least 41 people were killed and 45 injured in a fire inside a church in the Egyptian city of Giza on Sunday, two security sources told Reuters.

An electrical fire broke out just before 9 a.m. (0700 GMT) during Mass as 5,000 people gathered at the Coptic Abu Sifin church in the Imbaba neighbourhood, the sources said.

The fire blocked an entrance to the church, causing a stampede, they said, adding that most of those killed were children.

Blame load-shedding:
However, Father Farid Fahmy, from another nearby church in the Imbaba neighbourhood, told the AFP news agency that it was caused by a short circuit.

"The power was out and they were using a generator," he said. "When the power came back, it caused an overload."

I have visited that church - its probably one of the oldest Christian churches in the world.
What a tragedy, those poor people.

So have I been there.
Just illustrates the dangers of willy-nilly connecting a generator into an existing power board without the necessary interlocks and protection ( assuming that is what happened.)
Given that its Egypt, you are prob 100% on the money
