In 1994 just after the SALU building burnt, basically down.
Our offices were on the 22nd and 23rd floors and as the head of marketing I was "paid" by the company to get one so we could continue operations smoothly.
As a insurance company we were issuing cheques for claims within 4 days for our claimants. We all had our "desktops" and were in other temporary offices within 4 days as well.

I wanna say around 1997-8, I don't recall the particulars only that it was life changing. To be without one now is unthinkable. Coupled with the internet, what an incredible tool it has become....

Interesting..... I didn't know about that

It's not a good poll as it depends on your age.
Current generation will get their phones a lot earlier than us oldies as they weren't invented when we were 5, 10 or even 15 years old.
Yeah, the poll results correlate with the age of the forumites i.e. bunch of moaning oldies

I was the first "civilian" allowed back in the burnt building to retrieve 2 firearms that two of my sales guy's said were locked in their desks while they were at lunch (happened at lunch time). And they were nowhere to be found amongst the ruins. They have never come clean about their stories but I think they lost or had them stolen and this was their saviour. In those days it was still a act of terrorism to lose or have your firearm stolen.
I also went in to get some cars out the basement.

Think I was about 16 in matric. Parents got me some Motorola brick with like R5 airtime on it for emergencies.

It was the mid to late 90s - a Nokia from Orange in the UK. Damn thing only got a signal out on the tennis courts or in the paddock.

Good times.

Got my first phone(and my best phone) when I started my first job in 1996. Those years most people still did not care much for a phone. But I needed it for job. Car salesman. Still have the phone in perfect condition, just needs a battery.

9 years old I think. Motorola C200 in 2004. Just calls and SMSes to parents really, think there were 2 cool games on it too.
Became more essential when I got a Samsung E250 at 12 and could use Mxit.

Times have changed. Little cousin has her own iPad and phone (wifi only, for games and YT Kids) since she was 5.
Her brother is 8 now and some of his friends play on their phones at break despite phones being banned there.
