I enjoyed the original Act of War from Atari many months ago and today decided to buy the expansion pack called Act of War High Treason. What a disaster this turned out to be! The game is so full of bugs it's a disgrace. I went onto Atari's website to see if I can get a patch. Yes they do have one, but its 175MB! My internet costs me R2/MB, so the patch will cost me far more to download than what I paid for the game.

They deserve every pirate copy that eats away their profits.

well, I guess you have to blame the state of the internet in SA rather than atari :) 175 MB download usually doesn't cost anything elsewhere in the world :)

To Download 175MB using ADSL

Not sure how you worked it out at R2 a MB?

Using ADSL:-
The most expensive bandwidth at R99 a GB, will relate into a cost of R17.33 to download that 175Mb
Add to that the two line rental portions on let's say one day, costed on the cheapest ADSL option (384Kb - 1st of August 2006).

(R99.00>new line rental price as of August + R245.00) / 30days in the month = R11.47 (2xline rental per day)
R17.33+R11.47=R28.80 _______\
R28.80/175Mb=R0.16 per Mb
*Be careful to use a Download Manager in case your IP gets reset, power failures or unforeseen problems, otherwise you may need to download the file twice, hence doubling the price.

You do not mention what connection you have, but perhaps you are using another means to download your files other than ADSL.
Above example is for Home 384Kb ADSL.

BTTB, probably he is using unbundled GPRS/EDGE/3G, they are R2 per MB, but either way, I won't blame atari for that

Shew!
Is that what that technology costs in this country.
I only use ADSL and not familiar with all these new gadgets, bells and whistles. :p

Trafeye could ask a friend to download the file for him.
There are many willing people here on MyADSL.

Unfortunately I have out of bundle 3G internet only at present. But even at 50c/MB (VM) it will still cost almost R90 to get the patch! For a first patch 175 MB is a lot - an indication of the huge amount of bugs fixed. I'll call Megarom on Monday to see if I can get a CD from them with the patch on.

The game feels like a beta version.

This is yet another example of products being pushed into the market before it has been thoroughly tested. Many companies rush products onto the shelves - thus creating hassles for the consumer. In this case I bought a game imo not ready for distribution. Now it is up to me - the faithful honest non pirating customer - to find a way to get the actual final product that works at it should have from the start. This is unacceptable. A lot of stuff is sold like this lately (I'm also thinking here of MTN selling 3G cards without earpieces and antennas just to get ahead of the competition).
