This will have serious repercussions if he decides to go. I would wish him well in whatever he chooses. At least overseas there is no politics in sport. But he will be a great loss to SA rugby if he goes.

Under the new laws he will not be able to play for SA again if he does decide to leave :(

Though I watch rugby, I dont follow the business side of things. But surely SA franchises could match the offers from overseas? Besides those that may leave becuase of politics, Steyn has played for SA, and it just seems he is getting a great offer from the French.

It just puzzles me that Unions that often have packed games, and charge a premium for tickets, cant afford to keep these players. Where is the money going?

SA rugby is a bit more complex.

He (Steyn) will have a Springbok contract, a Sharks contract and endorsements. Now in extreme cases all the parties come together and see how they can match or beat said offers.

I know in most cases players have endorsements with major brands which will lose said companies plenty of advertising if said player goes to France. There is a possibillity if he has endorsements that he might stay. If all the parties come to the plate.

I can't see there being much truth to this .... he's 1) signed on at the Sharks until October (or thereabouts) and 2) he's just signed a Springbok contract. Maybe they approached him but I don't think he's going anywhere just yet ;)

By far the most overrated player in South Africa, and now it seems the world.

I still don't quite understand what value he brings to a team.

to me he still needs to mature as a player, because he still makes noob decisions at crucial moments. i doubt he will get any of that from this french team

Sure, You never will, from your side vote for Luke! Wonder what offer Luke got? I heard the french is also looking for a mascot and a carpet. Anyone knows if Luke applied?

Luke will in due course go and captain the Southern Spears. There, he will be most happy among people of his own culture.

BTW, it isn't a valid argument to criticise our team, for your team selections.

Pukey belongs on a different thread, and FWIW I agree with you about him.

Puke may be most hated, but Frans is the most overrated.

Seriously though, he doesn't even have a set position. He's too slow for fullback or wing, too indecisive for flyhalf, his best position is at centre, but he hasn't impressed me even there. What exactly do you see in him?

The one major problem with Steyn is that he wants the number 10 jersey, and currently that is a problem, because Pienaar has made this number his, and since they both play for the sharks its even more of a problem.

Maybe he should consider perhaps going to the freestate (seeing as he is from bethlehem), pretty sure there he will get to be 10, and then he can show everyone why he thinks he should be 10.

Hey easy there! He can dropkick one in every fifty attempts from just behind the halfway line :D

But yes, he makes the dumbest decisions imaginable at the worst times. He's definitely not a flyhalf and is probably just as lucky as Lance Sherril was to ever become a Springbok.

They are not making it very easy for him to decide, because if he goes he wont be able to play for The Sharks or SA again, not a nice choice if yo ask me.

With all the politics and crap in Rugby these days, I wonder how loyal the players really are?

what's this about? an irb or sarfu ruling?

EDIT: oh i see it's a sarfu ruling. i guess i can see why they do this by trying to stop people from leaving because of big money offers. but i fear the lure of R4m is pretty strong no matter how nationalistic you are.

Let him go... To be honest I dont think he deserves to be in the Springbok team anyways... Let him go overseas... Get the money, mature a bit (Like Percy) and hopefully the laws change in the future so he can come back and play SA rugby again...

Be honest now, Francois Steyn, makes to many mistakes... He isnt THAT good player... Sure he has good games but his not consistent... We have better players that specialise in one position in what does he specialise?

I say send him over and let them sourt him out...

Get over it, you little bitches. There's going to be a mass exodus of our 'stars'* after the Lions tour - it's how it goes. You don't think the chokers have the same problem?

*Only a retard would think this kid a star. Go ahead.
