Audi A1

I have agree (on topic) that TSI is something else. I have been (and still is) very impressed with the 1.4 TSI they have in the Tiguan. But, as with the Tiguan, its just too expensive which is why my VAG collecting buddy traded in his 1.4 Tiguan for the 2l one. For the money you are paying yo do expect more - which brings me full circle to reason #1 to hate VAG - its overpriced. It is not a Merc or BMW so it should not demand the same money.

Slightly off topic I would definitely not call the 1.2 Koreans crap. The 1.2 engines in the i10 kicks out 55kw and in the Spark 60kw. If you compare that to a 1.4 Vivo with 55kw or a 1.4 New Polo with 63kw you really cannot call the Koreans lame.

A4's do drive very nicely, and yes some might say better than the competition - but the dashboard is boring and blocky and the image of being seen in a VAG is something I can do with it. I am more original than that.

GM makes excellent cars. They make rubbish financial decision, on that everyone is clear, but their cars are excellent in particular GM Europe and GM Asia.

The 1.4 Trendline produces 63 kW bud. Only the barebones base model produces 55 kW. All of them produce 132 Nm of torque. How much of torque does your Korean bubble produce?

PS: you should steer clear of Bugattis and Lambos. I mean you wouldn't want to be seen in a VAG after all

seems nobody is talking about the A1 anymore... an S model will be cool. but bang for buck, I'd save some money and have the Polo, it's essentially the same car underneath.

I agree, VAG cars are most definitely overpriced, you can't deny it at all. Especially Audi, with all those optional extras you have to pay for - Still love the cars though.

Also the Koreans engines are not bad at all, impressive yes, but there is much more to a car than just the engine..

I'll agree to that for sure. Fortunately I did not have to pay for the A4 multitronic that I got to drive (VAG collecting buddy did), but if you want something as seamless as that then by all means the A4 is for you. It also pulls like you would not believe until you have driven one.

Korean interior quality is improving - even the Indian built i10 is good, but as you may have hinted its not on European level yet. Their styling is getting better with the likes of the ex-Audi designed Cerato from Kia and the i20 which was designed in RĂĽsselsheim, the hometown of Opel. That is probably why the i20 looks a lot like the Corsa.

Yeah because the location of where the guy decides to draw the picture affects how it will look :D You crack me up man.

S1 will be horribly overpriced.
I think the A1 will appeal because you get a cheap Audi. You get the brand for almost the same price as a polo, and that appeals to people.

Once you mention performance, I think people are a little smarter.
For 250k you can get a clio sport out of the box, which would probably be cheaper and better than an S1.

Jip, talked to a dealer at Audi Centre Cape Town (one in Waterfront) and he said prices for the A1 models currently in SA is 219k - 271k... so the Clio sport is cheaper even than the top of the range non-S.

A1 will still appeal, I actually want to test drive one :)

GM has rubbished the Opel brand when you walk into a GM dealership the new Astra is at the back of the showroom behind the used cars, the New Asta 1.4t is the best buy at the moment beats the Golf 1.4tsi anyday

Sadly, even considering the new Astra costs the same as an A1 and you get a whole lot more car for you money, many people that lack originality and individuality won't even consider it an option.

I wouldn't consider an Opel over an Audi :/

I am not badge-obsessed. I think it is better to judge each individual car on its own merits. Price is more of a factor in my opinion. I like to know how much value I am getting with each rand spent.

That is the problem with Audi/BMW/Merc etc. Yes, in general they ARE good cars, but for that price, there are very good cars you could also get.

Back to the A1, I like the look of it, but I will reserve judgment until I have seen one in the metal.

Audi is a premium brand. You will never get the same experience in an Opel that you get in an Audi.. never.

Opel isn't premium.. it's a bit like the Korean brands, you get A LOT of car for the money.. but it will never be in the league of Audi/BMW/Merc etc..

That is a good way of looking at it and it takes the discussion to a different point of view - is the A1 really a premium product? From the price and quality perspective I would say it is - but isn't it supposed to atract a much larger crowd to they Audi stable and how does that relate to being premium?

On the other side of the spectrum, yes Opel is not a premium brand, that much is true. Sadly in SA we get a much smaller picture of it and that is often what makes people think it is below other non-premium brands. In Europe they have the Insignia (2009 European car of the year) which competes with the likes of the VW Passat and Audi A4. It is a premium product from a non premium brand and it does help the image of that brand. It also offers a very good alternative to premium band products like the A4, 3-series and C-Class. Have a look on their German website (www.opel.de) and check it out if you do not believe.

Back the the A1, perhaps it can pull it off - I mean the A2 was pretty underpowered and it did not do that bad in Europe. Although it was a lot cheaper for them to buy than what we will pay for the A1.

Ofcourse - how utterly stupid of me :p ! We all know that designers are by no means even remotely influenced by what they see around them. Of course the styling similarities between the i20 and Corsa is just pure and utter randomness and it has nothing to do with the fact that the designers saw loads of Corsa driving around in hometown of Opel where they just happen to be - for no reason. Pffft, why would a car designer be interested in the cars they see around them. I must be so stupid for bringing that up.

So I visited Audi.

Just peeked...

Depending on your sound upgrade and LED packager that's R303K plus change and that's starting to creep into Golf GTi territory.
