Another one bites the dust.

Audi buys McLaren Group to secure Formula 1 entry

Autocar source reports that Audi has purchased the McLaren Group, safeguarding the future of the British supercar brand

An Autocar source reports that Audi has bought McLaren in a deal that gives the German manufacturer complete control over the whole group and secures it an entry into Formula 1.

The change of ownership should secure the future of McLaren, which has been operating under heavy financial pressures despite an injection of capital late last year following a refinancing worth up to £500 million. It is unclear whether the latest development is linked to the recent departure of McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt, who stepped down from his role after eight years last month.

McLaren stated there has been no change at a management level, while an Audi spokesperson had no official comment to add at this stage.

The takeover gives Audi access to another supercar brand alongside Lamborghini, which it controls. It also opens up the possibility of Audi engines powering McLarens, plus it gives the manufacturer control of highly rated McLaren Applied, the arm of the group that specialises in electrification systems for both road and track.

It is unclear what the implications of any Audi-McLaren tie-up would be on the now-finalised partnership between Rimac and Bugatti, which has been devised with the aim of developing all-electric successors to the Nevera EV hypercar and the soon-to-be-retired Bugatti Chiron.

Audi Purchases McLaren Group Says Report

Autocar is reporting that Audi has bought the McLaren in a deal that gives the German manufacturer complete control over the whole group and secures it an entry into Formula 1.

The unnamed source claims that the executive chairman, Paul Walsh was presented with an offer from Audi and took it to the board, which is majority controlled by the Mumtalakat Holding Company, the sovereign wealth fund of Bahrain. It is said the board rejected the first offer, insisted Audi should double it and an agreement to conclude a deal then followed.

We know McLaren has been under some financial pressure of late so this could secure the future of the Woking-based brand.

This not only gives Audi another supercar brand to control but also opens up the possibility of Audi engines powering McLaren’s.

Audi rumoured to have purchased entire McLaren Group

It has been well-documented that over the last few years, the McLaren Group has been experiencing a series of financial struggles. A new rumour suggests that Audi will soon be coming to the rescue as it has purchased the entirety of the British supercar manufacturer.

According to inside information sourced from Autocar, the acquisition of the McLaren Group will be a complete takeover from Audi. The finer details are still unclear as there is no confirmation if this news is related to the recent departure of McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt.

It is also unclear what the implications of any Audi and McLaren Group tie-up would be on the now-finalised partnership between Rimac and Bugatti, which has been devised with the aim of developing all-electric successors to the Nevera EV hypercar and the soon-to-be-retired Bugatti Chiron.

McLAREN GROUP STATEMENT

Update regarding news media report

McLaren Group is aware of a news media report stating it has been sold to Audi. This is wholly inaccurate and McLaren is seeking to have the story removed.

McLaren Group denies being bought by Audi

Brand issues statement after an Autocar source reported Audi had acquired McLaren with a view to racing in F1

McLaren has denied being bought by Audi, after an Autocar source reported that the German manufacturer had acquired the whole group to secure it an entry into Formula 1.

In a statement, the brand said the story was "wholly inaccurate", adding: "McLaren’s technology strategy has always involved ongoing discussions and collaboration with relevant partners and suppliers, including other carmakers, however, there has been no change in the ownership structure of the McLaren Group.”

An Audi spokesperson had no official comment to add at this stage, but Reuters reported yesterday that Audi was "open to cooperation opportunities". Earlier reports that BMW was interested in the Woking brand were subsequently dismissed by the Munich firm.

McLaren has been operating under heavy financial pressures despite an injection of capital late last year following a refinancing worth up to £500 million. McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt stepped down from his role after eight years last month.

A McLaren takeover would have given Audi access to another supercar brand alongside Lamborghini, which it controls. It would also have opened up the possibility of Audi engines powering McLaren. It would not, however, give Audi control of McLaren Applied, the arm of the group that specialises in electrification systems for both road and track, as that was sold to a private investment group earlier this year.

Something Weird Is Going On With McLaren

According to a report in Germany, a sale is near, though McLaren said it has not been sold.

McLaren, one of the most storied names in racing, is about to be sold for parts, if a new report is to be believed. There were a few indications that the report may not be entirely accurate, however, with BMW saying that it was “wrong.”

The report is from Automobilwoche, which is owned by Automotive News’ parent company Crain Communications, lending it some credibility. It follows McLaren’s CEO quitting a few weeks ago, which suggested that ... something is going on at McLaren.

Via Google Translate from Automobilwoche, whose report is a little vague:

According to information from Automobilwoche, Audi and BMW are interested in the British company McLaren. While the Munich-based company probably only deals with the sports car division McLaren Cars, Audi is also targeting the Formula 1 division.

[...]

This is the starting position before the decisive discussions with the McLaren main shareholder and other representatives of the capital side. The Bahrain state fund Mumtalakat holds around 42 percent of the British sports car manufacturer.

The first appointment with BMW and the sheikhs is to take place at the beginning of December, according to information from the automobile week in Woking.

The BMW-McLaren connection goes back to the time when Markus Duesmann was responsible for the BMW-Sauber Formula 1 team and Herbert Diess was BMW Board Member for Development. The plans, which Diess’s successor Klaus Frhlich pushed forward, to put a power hybrid sports car on the wheels together with the British, were only stopped at the last minute by Norbert Reithofer and Oliver Zipse. But the contacts continued in the background.
