On a day Michael Clarke called the most satisfying of his career, Australia returned to the No. 1 Test ranking for the first time in nearly five years, after the ICC's annual rankings update. Despite not having played a Test since their series win over South Africa in the first week of March, the Australians have edged ahead of South Africa because the rolling nature of the rankings system means results from 2010-11 have now been dropped.

The ranking system favours a team coming from behind. I wouldn't quite call them #1 yet.

We talking sport or politics here? :p

We'll soon earn it back from them...

Although I hope you are right, I doubt it. For the foreseeable future, the Aussies week be paying with their tails up and we have lost Kallis and Biff. With the recent announcement of 60% quota players and the loss confidence as well as the scratching around for players to retain their spots due to inconsistency, I think it will be a long time before we will take the top spot again.

The main reason they lost the ranking is due to lack of games. Australia have played almost twice as many games as South Africa

How stupid is this ranking system? It works for tennis and golf because there are plenty of good players and they play every week. With cricket you only have three teams really vying for top spot and test matches are rarer than hens teeth.

So Australia play more games than Proteas, win half of it and they go to top...but not immediately though, only after a few months of no games.....then in a couple of months Proteas will win against whatever numpty team they are playing (can't be bothered to check who) and Australia without playing a single game has in the space of two months gone from #2 to #1 then #2 again.
Proteas in meantime were 'lucky' enough to still be on top on 1st April and they get the trophy and cash (how appropriate is that date for this joke of a system).

India on other hand, the 3rd team that is a chance of this, no longer give a shyte...they play when they want to and against whom they want to.

No wonder test cricket cannot attract crowds anymore.

Huh?
India rule test cricket, they can decide who to play, yes but this means nothing when they're loosing.
Your argument would mean India by rights should be #1.

Did you read what I wrote??

No argument about who should or shouldn't be #1, 2 or 3...but the meaningless of a ranking where only 3 teams have a chance and the rankings in this case have a team go from #2, to #1 to #2 without bowling a ball...who cares?

And I missed the bit where they say "India rule test cricket".

Their cricket board rules International Cricket is what I meant to say.
The fact that you say that don't care about the rankings yet play more test cricket than any other nation and still can't top the rankings.
