Australian police see Apple Maps glitch as dangerous

Some of the local die hard isheep still only say the new maps is great,I guess they should tell that to those poor Australian souls who get lost in the national parks.

I think it was a good move by Apple in the long run though, having their own maps is essential especially since the competition like nokia and android comes with proper voice navigation.

This is unacceptable:twisted:. Apple cannot be wrong.
The Aussies must move that national park to where Apple say it must be.
:D

OMG the Aussie nanny state is hilarious. Rule No 1 always also check a normal map to get some bearings in case your GPS unit (all of them do weird things at some point) is off. Remember the truck driver who drove in to the sea or something in that line in the UK not too long ago because he just followed his Garmin? Then the other idiot who ended up in France.

Google, again getting free publicity. They must be having a good laugh.

Apple just took their knack for innovation to geographic locations as well. New slogan: "Apple will take you places you never knew existed".

You are holding the phone wrong if you get lost using Apple maps.

Seriously though. I knew Apple maps is not great and has lots of bugs but this is an epic fail.

Deadly? Wow.

In SA the Gov will demand that all iPads/iPhones have a compulsory non-removable messages on them stating that these devices can cause damage to your health due to incorrect directions to doctors, clinics and hospitals.

Surely by now everyone should be aware that Apple's maps are a mess?

Then the other idiot who ended up in France.
Now that is serious. Although I suppose you might be OK if you just stay in your car.

agreed. apple maps accuracy aside, surely people plan their route before blindly just trusting their gps... that goes for any gps/nav device. the amount of times i've asked my SO to plot the route and we've ended up in the wrong place... well it's a wonder we've both lived through it :) she trusts her devices implicitly and sets out forthwith. i like to see whether the thing is taking me to the right place first, and whether it's taking me on the best route (sometimes i know there's roadworks / updated map data which the device doesn't).

The question that didn’t get asked in the midst of the game of laughing-and-pointing at Apple is “what was the data source”? It is not, after all, Apple, since it takes time to build one’s own maps, and even Google’s improvements to incoming map data are still only part of the story. Google Maps credits the local data sources it uses, down in the right-hand bottom corner, underneath a couple of dialogues that obscure the credits.

In this case, the Australian Gazetteer – the authoritative list of 300,000-plus placenames, complete with coordinates – includes two Milduras. One is the “real” town, the other is an entry for “Mildura Rural City”, coordinates -34.79724 141.76108. It’s this second entry that points to the middle of the Murray-Sunset National Park, just near a spot called Rocket Lake.
