They officially withdrew the fatwa more than 20 years ago, after that nasty Ayatollah snuffed it.
You can’t withdraw a fatwa, it’s like an sms. Once you press send its gone. Also if he withdrew his 1st fatwa with a 2nd fatwa theres always a group who will claim there’s a 3rd fatwa which exactly the same as the 1st fatwa.

Interesting, I didn't know it was a shia fatwa, I'm assuming sunni's(the majority/largest muslim sect) would just ignore it because most of them seem to look upon shia as if they are dirt?

yes, many sunni muslims will go so far as to say shia are not muslims

and shia are around 10% of the total population of muslims

so with that in mind, read the comments in this thread again...

Why?

Also I don’t need to, here is a question for you: did his “fatwa” evaporate into thin air?

you made the claim, you have to back it up

if its your opinion fatwas can't be taken back, then you are entitled to your opinion

but you haven't demonstrated it is an objective fact

I am entitled to an opinion, and I can change my opinion, in this context the strength of this fatwa is closer to an opinion of the cleric as opposed to a binding legal judgement

Rushdie suffered three stab wounds to the right front of his neck, another four to his stomach, one each to his right eye and chest, and a cut to his right thigh

Please cite a specific reference that I am obligated to do this?

He can release a new fatwa to explain himself, but he can’t undo the ongoing damage he has caused by calling for someones head?

Fact is he can’t click undo.

LOL it’s “irrevocable” …

The suspect is a 24 year old American, born in the US. Just another kid looking for fame and a chance to be in the spotlight.
Brah.

So nothing in particular caused him to target an author who gave a scathing critique of Islam. It as just a random crime.

you have provided nothing which states that a fatwa can't be withdrawn, you are relying on your own argumentation and the opinion of others

The police have not yet established a motive as yet.

Edit: However the Iranian government has put a $3m contract out on his head. But no motive yet.

Salman Rushdie attack: Iranians react with mixture of praise and concern

Praise for attack on writer targeted by decades-old fatwa comes as some fear incident will leave Iran more isolated

“Cursed Salman Rushdie is stabbed with a knife in America,” said one outlet. “The evil on the way to hell; Salman Rushdie, the renegade author of Satanic Verses, was attacked in New York,” said a second publication, Khorasan. Another state outlet quoted from a report at the time of Khomeini’s fatwa, in which his successor, Ali Khamenei, said: “The imam has fired an arrow and it will not fail until it hits its target. I believe it will hit its target.

In recent years, Iranian officials had attempted to back away from the fatwa against Rushdie, claiming it was no longer a priority. However, many adherents of Khameini inside Iran and across the Shia Islamic world believed the decree to be binding.
