FlySafair and SAA planes collide at Johannesburg airport

Authorities are investigating an incident involving two aeroplanes damaged in a collision at OR Tambo International Airport — a South African Airways (SAA) Airbus and a FlySafair Boeing.

City Press reports that authorities believe the collision was caused by driver error or a possible equipment failure that saw the towing bar connected to the SAA plane come loose.

If only they had installed Jeni's patented fart detector in that Airbus then this could all have been avoided.

They should write the damages off. Government should repair both planes with taxpayer money. They should also apologize to the operators for the stress caused and pay them damages for all this trauma. The airport should be rebuilt and they should ensure bigger space between aircraft in future.

So nothing wrong with processes obviously if two people are involved, but it is pretty sad when people are paid to do a job, and then don't bother to watch what is going on. I'm somehow thinking it was not the tow-bar that broke - more likley not fastened properly, or cutting corners, which both come down to expensive driver error.

More of a fender bender than a collision.

Yeah, they should just have ignored it and let both planes just take off and fly. All this troubles for what? For what?

More of a fender bender than a collision.

A fender bender is a minor issue for a motor vehicle, since it does not affect performance or handling. With an aircraft that is not so, since pressurisation and aerodynamic controls are life critical. In addition it would have to be moved to a hangar, since you can't examine wing and tail surfaces from the ground.
