Auto-Locking doors in Cars to be removed

So I am in the market for a new car and after test driving a couple I noticed that the car doesn't lock itself at certain speed, like most of us are use to. We know how desperately we need this in our beloved SA....

Looks like all new cars produced after mid 2015 will have this option removed, will have to lock manually. I think this is a step back but it seems they don't have a choice as being governed by EU Law - this is where most of our cars come from.

The odds of getting carjacked is higher than being in an accident.

So I'll prefer the doors to lock automatically should I get a new car...

I have a 2008 Subaru Tribeca, and the doors don't auto lock; Apparently this is better in the case of an accident.
Unfortunately, the dynamics are a bit different in SA, and we have other things to worry about

Yeah it's irritating. My 8 year old Polo auto-locks, and my 2 year old 86 doesn't.

Realistically speaking though, in terms of safety in SA, I don't think that it makes much of difference in the real world. Criminals rarely (if ever) go for the door handles, they usually just smash the window...

I think this should be configurable. If you don't want it, you switch it off and if you want it , then you can switch it. This feature is critical for SA

lol, has anyone asked those butt wipes what difference auto locking makes in an accident.
here we are likely to lock the cars while driving (auto or manual lock.

in an accident the car would still be locked.

Apparently when you need to be removed from a vehicle, if the doors are locked it is a bit of an issue to get you out since not all fire stations have jaws of life.

Working off what a dealership told me.

LOL well said.

I stand to be corrected, don't some vehicle models have a feature that automatically unlocks the doors after an impact?

This is great news !

My car locks if I look away for more than a second, its horrible.
Locked my keys in the car the other day and it cost me 2k to get a locksmith on a sunday 100km out of CT.

Next time it will be my kid locked inside. My worst nightmare.

Autolock is the stupidest thing ever.

You should be able to disable this on most cars - what do you drive?

AFAIK it's a setting that can be changed on the cars computers, I remember Volvo charging R350 at one stage for enabling auto lock on their S60's

Automatic door locking just probably won't be factory enabled

Honda Ballade.

The other annoying thing is the boot, it has a latch at the front of the car but no button on the boot its self or on the key. Now try open the boot with your hands full of stuff and a toddler in your arms.

I know more fancy cars have a sensor so that will stop the car from locking if the keys are in the car.... but then I think you should only have autolock if you have such a sensor.

Most cars with this feature does yes. What I have read is that they can't guarantee that wires which activates the auto unlock wont be damaged in accident...

my vehicle auto locks at higher speeds, think its above 30kmh,
it also locks within a min of you unlocking, but not opening any door.
else it will stay open until you press the lock button.
