Auto-Locking doors in Cars to be removed

I'm quite a fan of auto-lock. Just a little peace of mind knowing that even if you forget to lock your doors, the car has it covered. In mine it's configurable from the cars menu, so I would imagine that this would be disabled by default, and not removed completely?

It would make sense that the cars doors are unlocked automatically in the event of an accident. But not after an accident as that leaves room for error, perhaps if the cars airbags deploy, it should unlock the doors at the same time.

I have a Freelander 2, it is configurable.

My BMW locks automatically, not sure if it can be disabled.

IMO you do need auto-locking in SA.

And protective film.

Just the way it is.

This is great news !

My car locks if I look away for more than a second, its horrible.
Locked my keys in the car the other day and it cost me 2k to get a locksmith on a sunday 100km out of CT.

Next time it will be my kid locked inside. My worst nightmare.

Autolock is the stupidest thing ever.

Doesn't your insurance have a Value Added Product on that would have covered this or most of it and not affected your loss ratio?

Covered me up to R500, the problem comes when you are 200km out of Cape Town.

New cars produced after mid 2015 wont have this. Well that's what the new law says

Catch-22 really. Between the time of your accident, and the arrival of emergency services, you still need your doors locked during that time. In SA, it is very common to have every single item of value, including ID, passport, luggage and so forth stolen from your vehicle while you lay incapacitated.

It should be left as a setting that the owner, knowing the pros and cons, can enable/disable as they see fit.

Break the window and claim when back in town. How much will that be with excess?

I seriously considered that, but had a 6 month old baby with me and it was winter. Also wasn't much to use to break the window. I hoped they would find a locksmith closer to where I was but they could only get a guy from Cape Town, what a fail.

Only upside is now I know how to break in to my car, took the guy exactly 4 mins from the time he arrived to the time he gave me my keys. No damage to the car at all

Retrospectively it would have been better and cheaper to just break a window

Cars that auto-lock will generally also automatically unlock once an accident is detected. The BMWs certainly do & I'd imagine the rest do as well...the car manufacturers aren't stupid.

I know the autolock thing is a pure software upgrade though...my dad's previous BMW came back from a service & acquired it as part of a software update.

We all know current cars can do this. The point of thread is that this function will be removed in future, they have already started doing this in Honda, Nissan, some Toyota etc. They wont make it available as part of software, it will be removed...

And we've confirmed that the software even prohibits enabling the feature and manual overrides have been disabled by the removal of the relevant button.

My vehicle auto-locks as soon as I reach 10km/h or so.
