My parents currently antivirus subscription ends in a week, and I'm debating on whether to buy them another year's subscription, or alternatively, but on AVG.... anyway I haven't used AVG in ages, so: Is it still the best? (the free version that is)

Newayz ... do what I do ... Me mom and me dad both have accounts at ABSA, I just call ABSA and use their Norton Antivirus free for a year deal [The link is on the internat banking website I think]. Then there's my sister's account, and my gran's account and ...

If it's free ... what's he thinking of paying for ?

I find AVG is allot less resource intensive than most, if not all, other virus software.

Agreed, why pay for an inferior product. AVG is excellent, uses little system resources and virus updates are free.

AntiVir (free) is also good. Might not have as many features for tweaking as other antivirus software and the interface is rather simplified. However, it's very effective in running system file scans for trojans and such in the background.

Just to quote from http://www.techsupportalert.com/free-vs-paid-av.htm

Scroll down to - The 2005 AV Tests Show Layering Works -

" My approach to these tests was similar to the one I used in 2004. The test data set was downloaded from the KaZaa P2P network though in this instance I used a sample of 104 files rather than the much larger set used in 2004.
I scanned this dataset with the top performing commercial scanner NOD32 together with the free AVG V7 anti-virus and Ewido anti-trojan. You can see the full results here

NOD32 found 53 malware products while AVG V7 found 51. This confirms the earlier finding that the best commercial AV scanners do detect more malware products than the best free scanners, though not a great deal more.

But here's the really interesting finding. When combined, the two free products AVG and Ewido between them detected 55 malware products.

That betters the figure detected by the commercial product NOD32. Yes, layering works. Better still, layering free products can end up giving better results than using expensive commercial products alone. "

Interesting reading though:

For commercial products I would go for NOD32, BitDefender.

For commercial products for Linux Fileservers I would go for Trend Micro™ .

For free non-commercial products AVG does the job fine & it's getting better.

Just my thoughts..

I wouldnt touch AVG with a stick, IMO its crap, maybe even worse than Norton.

In most cases in life, you get what you pay for, so you shouldnt expect much from AVG, (of course this doesnt apply to Telkom)

And for those who think AVG is so great, chech here how it measures up to other anti-virus products: http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=69&mnu=69
thing is its not a resource hog, unlike norton which bogs your system down. there obviously will be the odd bad review, but far more good reviews. for everyday use at home theres no point in paying for something which might do only a slightly better job. also if you pay for the software, you would expect virus definition updates to be free for life and not just for 6 or 12 months.

I totally agree that Norton is also really bad.

But, if you want proper protection, I guess u'll just have to pay, not much of a choice. Anyways, I wonder which company started this thing where you have to pay a yearly fee? Cos like with Windows for example, you dont have to pay a fee, but they keep on bringing out updates. and some AV products are rather expensive (nearly as much as Windows in some cases), esspecially to the general public who mostly buy it at Incompetent Curruptions.

I spoke to a guy who repaired my pc - he is from the old old school (DOS) and believes vehemently in avg. He also says that the virus-cleaning industry uses avg.

I use avg on my laptop and it is ok so far ... :)
