Has anyone managed to set this up?
The router does not terminate L2TP directly but allows VPN passthrough so Im assuming I can just forward the ports through to the linux server that it will terminate on and set it up on there.
Has anyone managed to do something like this?

Hi Rocket-Boy,

I have queried this with our Network Administrator and he has confirmed that the passthrough will not work, it has to terminate directly.

Rocket-Boy, try to set up the L2TP connection directly on the Linux server without forwarding any ports, considering you are making the connection outbound, you shouldn't need to forward ports. The IP will obviously live directly on the Linux server, which is probably where you will be hosting whatever anyway.

I was thinking along those lines too. Its a temporary solution while my neotel fibre is moved so its just for hosting a VPN and the linux server holds all the certificates etc. I could always take it a step further and just bridge the router then bring the ppp up on the server at the same time.

Can anyone tell me how to do this on Ubuntu, I dont have any of the routers they suggest we use but there must be a way to setup the static IP on Linux and then port forward?

I havnt got an account to test it yet, but you should be able to just put the router in bridge mode and then setup the l2tp/ipsec client connection on an ubuntu server.
Im going to sort the account out and then test it. Will post back with a howto if it all works correctly.

Urgh been fighting with this all day. Ubuntu doesnt want to play well with l2tp with no ipsec but a shared secret.
Windows server doesnt want it either.
Its pretty damn frustrating.

Yeah no joy my side either. Pointless that you can only use 1 of two routers for this to work...
